Michael Baker International is seeking an ambitious and driven Civil Associate, Highway/Roadway to join our New York City team for Spring/Summer 2027 . This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside some of the industry's leading transportation professionals on transformative infrastructure projects that improve mobility, safety, and quality of life throughout the region.
What You'll Do:
Shape the Future of Transportation in New York
As part of our Highway/Roadway team, you will contribute to the planning, design, and delivery of complex transportation projects for clients including NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, PANYNJ , DEP , cities, counties, and other public-sector agencies. You'll gain hands-on experience in roadway geometric design, roadside safety, ADA compliance, utilities coordination, maintenance and protection of traffic, contract document development, stakeholder engagement, and innovative project delivery.

While our primary focus is recruiting for Spring/Summer 2027 , highly qualified candidates may also be considered for immediate part-time opportunities based on experience and availability.
As a Civil Associate, you will play an active role in supporting transportation projects from concept through final design. Responsibilities include:
- Contributing to roadway and highway design, plan production, construction documents, maps, reports, and supporting technical documentation.
- Assisting in the preparation of engineering drawings for transportation, traffic, and infrastructure projects.
- Performing field investigations, utility research, and reviews of as-built plans and existing conditions.
- Developing quantity calculations and project cost estimates.
- Coordinating with designers and technical staff to deliver high-quality work products on schedule.
- Supporting permit applications and regulatory submissions.
- Assisting with client meetings, project workshops, and stakeholder coordination efforts.
- Participating in project team meetings and interdisciplinary design reviews.
- Conducting occasional site visits and communicating findings to project leadership.
- Collaborating effectively with engineers, planners, environmental specialists, and other disciplines.
- Expanding technical expertise through ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
What You Need to Succeed:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
- 0-2 years of transportation engineering experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities.
- A collaborative mindset and commitment to delivering quality work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Transportation Engineering or a related field.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or the ability to obtain it within one year.
- Planning to take the PE exam.
- Experience supporting roadway design from Preliminary Engineering through Final Design.
- Familiarity with post-design or construction-phase services.
- Experience with transportation design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), Excel, ArcGIS, and scheduling tools.
- Exposure to agency standards and procedures for NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, PANYNJ, NJDOT, NJTA, cities, counties, or similar clients.
Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $78,000 - $80,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
