About this role

Mission:

We are the technology company for construction, redefining the entire life cycle of the build to usher in a new era of abundance and beauty in the physical world. Over the past fifty years, the West’s ability to design and build large scale infrastructure has atrophied, and the entire industry has become less productive. With decaying infrastructure, power shortages, and an aging workforce, the only way through is to hyper-scale development with technology at a rate never before seen.

Our team believes that this is the most important work of our lives, and there’s no more significant place to spend our time than on solving these problems. We believe in the sacrifices that we must make to achieve our mission and build a world of abundance. We believe the future can be amazing, but only if we work gut-wrenchingly hard to make it so. Our work is bigger than all of us, and our obsession with manifesting is what drives us. Roughly 50% of our team are former founders, and we strive for technical excellence, but quell our egos to ensure that the best ideas always win.

We acknowledge the long and arduous path ahead to achieve our ambitions; that many of the most difficult challenges have yet to even be revealed to us; that the chance of failure is not only possible, but likely. Most of all, we believe that there is no other option: we will either revolutionize how humanity builds or die trying.

The role:

We're hiring our first construction lead. We already serve as Engineer of Record on gigawatts of utility-scale energy projects, but we don't want to stop at designing them. We want to build them. This person will define how we do that.

Initially, the job is to define our build culture: how we organize ourselves to build, what we own directly, and where we partner. On our first projects, this likely means finding the right EPC/GC to build with, and managing them closely enough that the project moves at our pace, not the industry's. This is a very hands-on role. We expect you to be deep in the weeds on every project, not just managing people.

We want to build the way Tesla and SpaceX build: vertically integrated, with engineering and construction working as one team and decisions made in days instead of months. Because we're the Engineer of Record, a problem found in the field can become a design change the same week. You'll be the person who makes that loop real on site.

We are early. There is no construction department and no playbook, and we're not looking for someone to import one from a large EPC. Anything repetitive in this job should be automated with AI, and we expect you to do exactly that.

This role is in-person in San Francisco, CA and will include significant time on job sites.

What we're looking for :

- You've been the responsible leader on multiple large capital projects that actually got built, from groundbreaking through energization
- An engineer by background
- A builder at heart: you lead from the front, you're on site, and you're hands-on when it counts
- You're frustrated by how slowly this industry builds and how much bureaucracy sits between a decision and steel in the ground
- You know how EPCs and general contractors actually operate, so you can pick the right partner and hold them to the schedule
- An AI bull: you already automate everything repetitive with AI, or you're clearly on that ramp and can show it
- Mission alignment and desire to build a future of abundance

Experience: Responsible leadership on multiple large capital projects (utility-scale energy, gas generation, data centers, or comparable heavy industrial work). Engineering background required.

This is probably not the role for you if :

- You think the way this industry builds today is basically fine
- You'd rather manage from an office than lead from the field
- You solve schedule risk with more process and more paperwork
- You need a large construction organization around you to be effective

Bonus:

- Utility-scale gas generation projects: simple cycle, combined cycle, or reciprocating engines
- Time at a vertically integrated builder like Tesla or SpaceX, or leading construction from the owner's side
