Job Description
To be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title, or must file for the upcoming civil service exam# 7010. Filing opens from 10/7/26 to 10/27/26. Proof of filing must be provided.
NYC DOT have repair shops in every borough except Manhattan. NYC DOT Fleet maintains a wide variety of equipment from lawn mowers to front end loaders, Toyota Priuses and Mack Trucks.
There are multiple shifts: 06:00 to 2:30, 07:00 to 3:30, 2:00 to 10:30 and an overnight shift. We may change shifts due to operational needs. Your responsibilities would be but not limited to: Working on vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel engines, removing and replacing transmissions, and performing preventative maintenance inspections. You would be required to work independently to diagnose and repair engine mechanical, engine electrical, repair brakes, replace brakes, repair steering and suspension and perform New York State Inspections. You would be required to respond to road calls and would have to perform minor repairs in the field, such as replacement of tires, batteries, air lines. In the event of inclement weather, such as snowstorms, heat waves and rainstorms it would be mandatory that you report to work, your shift may change on short notice, or you could be temporarily reassigned to a shop in another borough. You are expected to keep your workstation clean, follow your supervisors' orders and adhere to the code of conduct.
AUTO MECHANIC - 92510
Qualifications
1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic; or
2. Not less than two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience as specified in "1" above plus sufficient helper or apprentice experience or relevant full-time education acquired in a college, university,technical school, trade school or vocational high school approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or relevant education.
License Requirements:
At the time of appointment candidates must possess a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License ("CDL") or a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York and a Learner's Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License. Appointees hired with a Learner's Permit must obtain the Class B CDL within six months of appointment. The CDL, with no restrictions that would preclude the performance of Auto Mechanic work, must be maintained for the duration of employment.
