About this role
Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy is building a highly AI-focused team within Supply Chain Operations to create products and platforms that help teams work smarter, make better decisions, and automate repetitive work, with the potential to benefit the broader enterprise.
We are seeking a Software Engineer II to help build intuitive, reliable applications that bring AI into employees’ everyday workflows. Our team combines AI, shared knowledge, analytics, workflow automation, and reusable integrations to help employees find information, explore data, and complete tasks while remaining in control.
In this role, you will develop features across the user experience, backend services, and enterprise integrations. You will partner with engineers, product partners, and supply chain teams to turn emerging ideas into secure, scalable products. This is an opportunity to help shape Chewy’s emerging AI ecosystem and see how your work improves day-to-day operations.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and operate full-stack AI applications, owning well-defined features from technical design through deployment and ongoing improvement.
- Build AI-powered experiences for knowledge discovery, conversational analytics, workflow automation, and creating and sharing business artifacts.
- Integrate language models, enterprise systems, and reusable tools into secure workflows with appropriate human review and reliable error handling.
- Embrace a builder’s mindset: test ideas by building—make, break, and rebuild in pursuit of meaningful, intelligent systems. Fail fast and iterate continuously, using evidence to refine solutions and deliver practical value.
- Use AI-assisted development tools throughout coding, testing, debugging, and documentation, taking ownership of the correctness, security, and maintainability of the results.
- Evaluate AI features using representative tasks, automated checks, and user feedback, balancing answer quality, task completion, latency, and cost.
- Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate operational challenges into practical solutions and communicate technical trade-offs.
- Improve application reliability, performance, and release quality through automated testing, monitoring, and CI/CD.
What You’ll Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building and delivering applications.
- Experience developing interfaces with React and TypeScript, or comparable technologies, and backend services and APIs using Python, Java, TypeScript, or a similar language.
- Experience working with SQL or NoSQL databases and building and operating applications on AWS or a comparable cloud platform.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, with the ability to independently design, test, troubleshoot, and deliver maintainable features.
- Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools, with concrete examples of how you improved your workflow, validated generated code, and corrected unsuccessful approaches.
- Hands-on experience building AI-powered systems and the curiosity to find and frame your own problems to solve, with examples of independently turning ideas into working solutions and evaluating their results.
- Understanding of language model capabilities and limitations, including inaccurate outputs, context constraints, sensitive data handling, and the need for evaluation and human oversight.
- Ability to collaborate with engineers and business partners, communicate technical decisions, and learn new technologies through hands-on experimentation.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience building applications that integrate language model APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, or tool calling.
- Experience designing conversational interfaces, analytics experiences, or workflows that require users to review and approve AI-proposed actions.
- Familiarity with evaluating AI outputs and using feedback to improve product quality.
- Experience building enterprise integrations, reusable platform components, or services that enforce access permissions.
- Experience with automated UI testing, CI/CD pipelines, containers, or infrastructure as code.
- Experience building internal enterprise tools or software for supply chain, operations, or e-commerce.
Success in This Role
You independently deliver reliable, useful features and support them effectively in production. You demonstrate an AI-first mindset through practical improvements to how you build software and how employees work, using experimentation, measurable results, and sound engineering judgment.
