About the Role
The Development Scientist supports formulation development for global OTC products within the Systemic Pain portfolio, including brands such as Panadol, Advil, Excedrin, and other regional products. This role is primarily focused on the development and optimization of oral solid dosage (OSD) formulations , supporting innovation, product improvement, and lifecycle management initiatives across global markets.
The successful candidate will design and execute formulation studies, generate technical data to support product development, and collaborate across R&D functions to deliver projects that meet scientific, quality, regulatory, and business objectives. This is an excellent opportunity for a formulation scientist looking to grow within a global OTC R&D organization and gain exposure to products serving multiple international markets.
Role Responsibilities
Execution Powerhouse
- Manage or contribute to one or more projects supporting brand innovation and lifecycle management initiatives.
- Design, execute, and interpret formulation development studies with a focus on oral solid dosage products.
- Conduct laboratory experiments and generate technical data to support product development decisions.
- Develop and execute experimental methods, protocols, and technical studies.
- Collaborate with external partners and suppliers to support project delivery.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and project documentation.
- Produce and contribute to quality documentation including SOPs, batch records, validation protocols, and reports.
- Conduct all work in accordance with GMP, EHS, and site quality requirements.

- Remain current on scientific literature and emerging technologies relevant to formulation development.
- Develop knowledge of global regulations impacting OTC product development.
- Present technical findings at project and departmental meetings.
- Support training activities and share technical expertise within the team.

- Partner with Consumer Understanding and Sensory teams to translate consumer insights into product innovation.
- Support development activities that improve consumer experience and product performance.
Data-Driven
- Generate, analyze, and communicate technical data to support project milestones and decision making.
- Ensure all experimental work follows good scientific practice and Good Manufacturing Practice where applicable.
Agile
- Manage multiple priorities across concurrent projects.
- Contribute to technical problem solving and troubleshooting.
- Take ownership of laboratory equipment and associated responsibilities.
Why You?
Basic Qualifications
- BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related scientific discipline.
- 3+ years of relevant formulation or product development experience in a pharmaceutical, OTC, or consumer healthcare environment.
- Experience working in a laboratory setting and applying scientific principles to product development challenges.
- Ability to organize, analyze, and communicate technical data.
Preferred Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific discipline.
- Hands-on experience developing oral solid dosage products (tablets, powders, granules, coated systems, etc.).
- Experience in pharmaceutical or OTC product development.
- Experience supporting formulation development through scale-up, validation, or commercialization activities.
- Understanding of GMP requirements and product development processes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently while contributing to cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Basic understanding of statistics and experimental design.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Passion for innovation, continuous learning, and scientific excellence.
Location
This laboratory-based role is located in Richmond, VA and requires regular onsite presence (4-5 days per week).
The salary range for this role is: $89,787- $123,457.40 plus an 8% on target bonus.
