About this role

Description

Amazon's Worldwide Grocery Stores Technology (WWGST) organization is seeking an experienced Data Engineering Manager to lead the Data Platform Management (DPM) team within Global Operations Engineering and Support (GOES) organization. You will lead a team of data engineers and database administrators who build and support the custom reporting and analytical applications that Grocery business users depend on every day, and who operate the database platforms underpinning WWGST applications. You will own both delivery and modernization, driving the transition of our data platform from legacy third-party solutions to next-generation, AWS-native infrastructure. This is a unique opportunity for a leader inspired by Amazon's high-growth grocery business to shape both a team and a technology strategy.

Key job responsibilities
- Lead Engineers and Database Administrators, owning performance management and career growth.
- Own operational excellence for custom reporting and analytical applications, their data pipelines, and the database platforms underpinning WWGST applications, including the team's on-call rotation and on-time data delivery.
- Own production change management, including change plans, approvals, and release schedules.
- Ensure applications and infrastructure meet security and compliance standards, including security reviews, credential rotation, and audit requirements.
- Own the roadmap for the team's data and reporting solutions, partnering with WWGST leadership and business stakeholders to prioritize.
- Set the technical bar: guide the design of scalable data models, ETL/ELT processes, reporting solutions, and database architectures.
- Drive the transition from legacy and third-party solutions to AWS-native infrastructure, making pragmatic build/buy/migrate decisions, and manage third-party partner relationships, including knowledge transfer and transition planning.
- Balance project delivery against operational support, managing sprint planning, prioritization, and backlog health.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Software Development, Business Intelligence, Product, and Program Management teams across WWGST and Whole Foods Market (WFM).
- Own communication to senior leadership and business stakeholders, covering roadmap progress, risks, and trade-offs, plus timely, clear updates during incidents.

A day in the life
Your day blends people leadership with technical direction. You will run standups and 1:1s, unblock engineers, review designs, and represent the team in cross-functional planning. Your team works across multiple technology stacks using SQL, Python, and Java; you stay technical enough to challenge a data model, question an ETL design, and pressure-test a database upgrade plan. You will watch pipeline health, database availability, and data delivery commitments, coordinating incident response when operations demand it. You will sequence modernization work against business-as-usual demands and spend real time hiring and developing talent.

About the team
The Data Platform Management (DPM) team under Global Operations Engineering and Support (GOES) is made up of data engineers and database administrators responsible for data and reporting solutions and database platform operations for Grocery business users. We enable sophisticated, fact-based decision making across WWGST by delivering constantly evolving technology and analytic capabilities. The team solves challenging and novel problems every day while collaborating with multiple teams across WWGST and Whole Foods Market (WFM). You will enjoy and contribute to the unique blend of Amazon and WFM Tech culture.
