JOB SUMMARY
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safety, security and well-being of the Hamline University campus community. Public Safety Officers enforce University policy and applicable law and play a key role in crime prevention. Officers become familiar with all assigned areas to assist community members, prevent crime through active patrols and engage with guests. Officers must complete initial and ongoing training, including annual use of force and medical recertification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ensure safety and security of university grounds through foot and vehicle patrols.
• Respond to crimes, policy violations, emergencies, accidents and requests for assistance; coordinate with police, fire
and emergency responders.
• De-escalate disruptive activity and, when necessary and authorized, detain and control persons engaged in criminal
acts or acts endangering community safety.
• Write professional, detailed incident and investigative reports; enforce university policy and applicable law.
• Complete designated NIMS and ICS courses within 90 days of employment.
• Respond to life safety alarms and assist with building evacuations.
• Provide access assistance, safety escorts, jump starts and other calls for service.
• Use CCTV, video management, access control, alarms and other security systems effectively.
• Address trespass incidents when appropriate and serve as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act.
• Support special events, complete driver training and safely operate university vehicles as required.
• Earn and maintain BLS/First Aid certification within 90 days and EMR certification within one year.
• Perform other duties as requested.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Staff Sergeant. Does not supervise employees or student workers.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT
No budget management responsibility.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
• Punctuality and readiness for assigned shifts.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google tools, reporting software, camera systems and basic security systems.
• Respectful response to people of diverse backgrounds while preserving individual and community dignity.
• Strong verbal communication and clear, effective report writing.
• Basic knowledge of the Clery Act, Title IX and Minnesota sexual assault law for higher education.
• Ability to pass initial and annual defensive tactics training and safely use issued equipment.
• Sensitivity when working with students from diverse backgrounds and ability to cover staffing shortages when needed.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or GED.
• Excellent communication skills.
• At least one year of experience with basic computer programs.
• Ability to respond to stressful incidents and make timely decisions with limited supervision.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Valid driver’s license.
• Associate degree from an accredited institution.
• At least one year of security experience in higher education.
• Emergency Medical Responder certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT
• Must perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Work outdoors in seasonal extremes and respond to environmental, medical, fire and bloodborne pathogen hazards.
• Wear and use all department-issued equipment; occasionally lift 25-50 pounds.
• Stand and walk for extended periods, up to 80% of a shift.
• Respond to aggressive persons and other hazards associated with criminal activity.
• Bend, crouch, push, pull, kneel and climb stairs while carrying equipment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Full-time, 1.0 FTE, 12-month position.
• Starting rate: $21.00 per hour.
Example of a two-week schedule:
Week 1: Tuesday–Friday, 9:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
Week 2: Monday–Tuesday and Saturday–Sunday, 9:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
Each week includes four 10-hour shifts. The overnight shift is counted based on the day it starts.
