Position Specific Description

The Engineering Construction & Supply Chain (ECSC) and FPL Transmission & Subtation team is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead the engineering and execution of complex, high-voltage substation projects. Serving as a Senior Project Engineer and technical lead, you will manage projects from scoping through construction and commissioning. This role combines advanced technical engineering with the oversight of internal stakeholders, external Engineers of Record (EORs), and suppliers.

Core Job Functions & Scope
• Serve as the technical lead for complex, high-value substation projects through planning, engineering, procurement, construction, and closeout.
• Give technical direction to external EORs and consultants, ensuring designs comply with company standards, interconnection requirements, and industry codes.
• Lead reviews of engineering drawings, calculations, and specifications to resolve design, constructability, and interface issues.
• Own major equipment procurement strategies, technical bid evaluations, vendor selections, and complex supplier problem-solving.
• Lead engineering coordination across substation, transmission, protection/control, civil, and operations teams to clarify project interfaces.
• Support the development and validation of project cost estimates, schedules, contracting strategies, and scope definitions.
• Proactively identify engineering and execution risks to develop mitigation strategies that protect project safety, quality, cost, schedule, reliability, and operability.
• Interpret and implement applicable interconnection requirements, facility studies, transmission requirements, and system studies within project designs.
• Provide senior engineering support during construction by evaluating significant field changes, nonconformances, and design conflicts.
• Ensure project closeout documentation accurately captures final designs, as-installed conditions, technical decisions, and lessons learned.
• Mentor less experienced engineers and drive the development of systematic engineering standards, specifications, and organizational capabilities.

Position Expectations
• Operate with high autonomy, exercising sound engineering judgment to resolve complex issues and serving as a technical resource for project teams.
• Strengthen the broader engineering organization through mentorship, continuous improvement, and the application of lessons learned.
• Maintain a steadfast focus on safety, quality, and timely project delivery, with a requirement for 25% travel and field support.

Preferred Requirements
• Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or EI/FE certification.
• Extensive background in high-voltage substation design, construction, and commissioning.
• Proven history leading multidisciplinary utility projects and managing external EORs.
• Advanced experience with major equipment procurement, technical bid evaluations, and utility codes (IEEE, NESC, ASCE).
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills to resolve complex technical issues independently.
