What’s in it for you?
We are seeking a Smart Buildings Integration & Test Engineer to oversee the validation, testing, and cloud readiness of our next-generation connected building technologies. In this role, you will bridge the gap between embedded hardware design, building automation sub-systems, and enterprise cloud layers—ensuring smart controllers and edge devices seamlessly integrate into modern edge-to-cloud architectures.
The ideal candidate pairs deep HVAC and Building Automation Systems (BAS) field/lab validation experience with software QA automation and cloud connectivity expertise. You will establish and run our physical Integration Test Lab, designing advanced test setups to validate system interoperability, protocol compliance (BACnet, Modbus, MQTT), and overall network scalability across unified smart building ecosystems.
What Will You Do?
- Connect, configure, and unify smart HVAC, lighting, energy management, and edge devices with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub) via REST APIs, MQTT, or WebSockets.
- Design, build, and maintain the physical Integration Test Lab infrastructure, test benches, and prototyping walls to keep it aligned with new BBAI products and technologies.
- Execute comprehensive protocol stack validation across BACnet (MS/TP, IP), Modbus (RTU, TCP), MQTT, and wireless meshes (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/Thread).
- Validate seamless hardware-to-software integration across controllers, edge devices, thermostats, and expansion modules with enterprise platforms (e.g., Envoy, CBMS).
- Verify BACnet object discovery, properties, BTL compliance, and device profiles across hybrid IT/OT networks.
- Utilize laboratory instrumentation—including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMMs), bench power supplies, and network sniffers (Wireshark)—to isolate physical layer signal degradation, serial bus faults (RS-485), power interruptions, and hardware defects.
- Design, implement, and maintain version-controlled test strategies, test suites, automated regression scripts (using Python, Postman, or Jenkins), and hardware and software test benches to simulate high device counts and stress-test network scalability.
- Replicate real-world field conditions, edge cases, and failsafe scenarios—such as sudden loss of sensor signals, power brownouts, and network traffic load limits—to verify recovery protocols prior to production release.
- Manage day-to-day physical lab operations, and maintain a centralized QA repository containing test plans, execution logs, raw packet captures, and Jira anomaly tracking.
- Serve as the technical bridge between Product Management, Development, Hardware/Software Engineering, Technical Support, and Field Deployment personnel to drive unified organizational consensus on launch readiness.
- Translate laboratory findings into actionable installation guidelines, troubleshooting SOPs, and technical documentation for deployment teams and field technicians.
- Serve as a subject matter expert during early product evaluations, identifying potential systemic flaws before full production release.
- Translate edge-case and stress-testing boundary findings into actionable technical guidelines, troubleshooting SOPs, and commissioning checklists for field installation crews and customer support teams.
What You Will Bring:
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Building Automation, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, hardware & software testing, or smart building system integration.
- Protocol & Networking Expertise: Advanced proficiency with BACnet (IP, MS/TP), Modbus (RTU, TCP), and MQTT. Strong IT/OT networking foundation, including managed switches, IP routing, subnetting, VLAN configuration, and Wireshark packet analysis.
- Software QA & Tools: Proven experience in both manual and automated software/hardware testing environments. Hands-on expertise with tools like Postman, Python scripting, logic analyzers, DMMs, oscilloscopes, and Jira defect tracking.
- Controls & Domain Knowledge: Deep understanding of HVAC control loops, Direct Digital Control (DDC) programming, sequence of operations (SOO), and electrical schematics.
- Industry Certifications: Active Tridium Niagara N4 Certification, AWS Certified Solutions Associate, or ISTQB Advanced Level Test Automation Engineer.
- Frameworks & Data Models: Familiarity with Division 25 Master Systems Integration (MSI) concepts and semantic building data models (e.g., Project Haystack, Brick Schema).
- Building Automation Platforms: Experience evaluating or integrating major BAS platforms (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure, Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo, Distech Controls).
- OT Cybersecurity: Understanding of operational technology cybersecurity practices and frameworks (e.g., BACnet/SC, ISA/IEC 62443).
- Advanced Degrees: Postgraduate qualifications in Electronic Engineering, Project Management, or Technology Management.
