## Job Summary
The Defense & Materials Solutions team is currently seeking an Electrical Engineering Graduate Student Co-Op. This position is 100% onsite located in Columbus, Ohio. The Electrical Engineering Co-op will support Battelle’s National Security business. This group specializes in the design, development, testing, and production of unique, complex electronic and electromechanical systems. Application Deadline: October 30th, 2026.
## Responsibilities
- Analyzing equipment to establish operating data, conducting experimental tests, evaluating results, and selecting components based on specifications, performance, and reliability requirements.
- Contributes to the development and application of tools, simulations, and models for electric power systems to address challenges in system planning, operations, economics, resilience, and performance optimization.
- Maintaining, testing and troubleshooting existing electrical/embedded systems as part of an integrated technical team.
- Working closely with Battelle engineers located in Columbus, OH to design, fabricate and integrate new electrical/embedded systems.
- Generating and interpreting electrical schematics.
- Generating and following installation and testing procedures
- Build, prototype, and evaluate electronic hardware assemblies in laboratory environments.
- Prepare engineering documentation as required
## Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program
- Currently pursuing a master’s degree or PhD in electrical engineering or related field
- U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain an active DoD or equivalent agency clearance.
- Solid grasp of basic electrical engineering concepts and ability to learn
- Experience with standard lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, and programmable power supplies.
- Experience working in a lab environment such as soldering, wiring, test preparation, data collection and documentation
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office application software such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Positive attitude and eagerness to take on technical challenges
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
## Preferred Qualifications
- Pursuing advanced coursework in one of the following related fields: Power and energy, including solid state power conversion, analog circuit design, control systems, and power system design
- Familiarity and interest in working with analog electronics, power electronics, magnetics, electric motors, feedback controls, power quality, and electromagnetic compliance of power conversion systems
- Familiarity and interest with modeling and simulation of analog circuits, power conversion circuits, and motor drive systems using SPICE circuit simulators and MATLAB/Simulink
- Previous internship or work experience with systems utilizing DC voltage in the 100VDC to 500VDC range and/or 3-phase AC power systems up to 480 VAC at power levels up to 100 kW.
## Compensation Data
The salary range for this role is $20.00 – $40.00 per hour, in addition to a $2,000 housing stipend for students relocating more than 50 miles from home and university. Internship pay is benchmarked against national averages taking into consideration a student's major and year in school.
