SUMMARY

Under department head’s supervision, is responsible for a large variety of technical and advanced duties in support services. Employees receive on-the-job training and perform related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualification(s)

- High school diploma OR

- 60 semester hours of successful college coursework OR 2 years of paid library experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

- Knowledge of current technology.

- Skills to type accurately.

- Skills to work with library processing materials requiring manual dexterity.

- Skills to use copiers and printers.

- Skills to format and print labels.

- Skills to organize and plan daily tasks effectively and solve routine problems using work procedures.

- Skills to work with minimum supervision.

- Ability to use Dewey Decimal system.

- Ability to use electronic and printed materials, resources and databases.

- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, library policies, and procedures.

- Ability to work with library materials in a variety of formats and adjust procedures accordingly.

- Ability to operate specialized equipment.

- Ability to follow library, principles, policies, and procedures.

- Ability to correctly match a physical library item to a catalog record.

- Ability to perform basic maintenance on a label printer.

- Ability to make decisions based on established policies and practices.

- Ability to use correct grammar, punctuation, and formatting to proofread labels.

- Ability to meet daily workload goals with a high degree of accuracy.

- Ability to count items on a book truck and correctly match the number with a work slip.

- Ability to recognize and report damaged items.

- Ability to deal with multiple and extra unexpected tasks simultaneously.

- Ability to establish positive relationships with staff and vendors.

- Ability to create and maintain pleasant impressions of the library.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, twist, talk, hear, and use hands to reach for, finger, grasp, handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools, or controls.  Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally to frequently, required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl.  The employee must occasionally to frequently lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds, frequently to constantly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds.  Employee must frequently to constantly push and/or pull loaded book carts and/or boxes of materials weighing up to 75 pounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Organizes library materials received from the Acquisitions Department and ensures they are ready and suitable for cataloging.

- Ensures cataloged items are ready for release to the Interlibrary Loans Department.

- Repairs broken and damaged items and restores them to the database; reports new damaged items to the Cataloging Department Head.

- Adds item records to Workflows when additional copies are received or records were deleted in error.

- Follows Cataloging worksheet to accurately count items and correctly process items for cataloging.

- Updates labels for items on branch shelves as directed.

- Professional Development: Meets quarterly with supervisor for work review meeting; attends other meetings as necessary. This position requires travel to other locations for work, meetings, and training.

- Other: Performs other duties as required.

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]:

Monday – Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (1/2 hour unpaid lunch)

SALARY

$18.50/hour + benefits; required 12% deductions for all full-time employees for retirement through the city of Shreveport

A criminal background check and a drug screening are part of the pre-hire process. The State of Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information and these checks will be conducted on a yearly basis for positions which provide outreach to daycare centers. A mandatory full day orientation is part of the new hire process; these orientations are scheduled on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
