The MA may assist with clinical procedures, maintains accurate documentation, and provides administrative support to ensure smooth daily operations. Position Overview
At Mercy, Medical Assistants are vital members of the care team who support providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, compassionate, and efficient manner. The Medical Assistant in the Women's Health Clinic will assist physicians and advanced practice providers in delivering high-quality care to patients across a variety of women's health services. This role combines clinical and administrative responsibilities while ensuring exceptional patient experiences and supporting daily clinic operations.
The Medical Assistant functions within their defined scope of practice under the supervision of licensed providers and in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and standards of care.
### Essential Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Greet, room, and prepare patients for appointments and procedures.
- Obtain and accurately document vital signs, chief complaints, medical history, medication history, and other pertinent patient information.
- Assist providers during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Perform basic diagnostic testing and specimen collection as deemed competent and within scope of practice.
- Reinforce patient education and instructions as directed by the provider or nursing staff.
- Ensure patient comfort, privacy, and confidentiality throughout the visit.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation within the electronic health record (EHR).
Women's Health Clinic Support
- Support providers with routine gynecological examinations and women's health procedures.
- Assist with patient preparation for annual wellness visits, preventive screenings, contraception management, and other specialty services performed within the clinic.
- Promote a welcoming and supportive environment for women of all ages and backgrounds.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Schedule appointments, diagnostic tests, referrals, and follow-up visits.
- Answer phones and respond to patient inquiries professionally and efficiently.
- Manage incoming faxes, scanned documents, and electronic communications.
- Assist with patient check-in and check-out processes as needed.
- Coordinate provider schedules and patient flow to support clinic efficiency.
Clinic Operations
- Maintain exam room cleanliness and organization.
- Monitor and restock clinical supplies and equipment.
- Follow infection prevention protocols, patient safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in staff meetings, training programs, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Perform additional duties within the Medical Assistant scope of practice as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- New hire must successfully complete Mercy MA Clinic Academy training.
Additional Requirements
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required if applicable to Hospital Outpatient Department requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Experience
- One year of Medical Assistant experience in an outpatient, ambulatory, OB/GYN, Women's Health, or physician office setting preferred.
Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with patients, providers, and coworkers.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of outpatient clinical procedures, medical terminology, and clinical equipment.
- Commitment to patient-centered care and continuous professional development.
- Demonstrates respect and sensitivity toward diverse patient populations.
Work Environment
- Outpatient Women's Health clinic with frequent patient interaction.
- Fast-paced environment requiring collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and support staff.
- Potential exposure to infectious materials; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) provided.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to reach, bend, kneel, squat, twist, and perform repetitive motions necessary to support patient care activities.
