Position Summary
The Telecommunications Service Technician performs MAC (moves, adds, and changes) work, troubleshooting, repair, and small-project cabling support for end-user and owner accounts under Division 27 scopes — copper and fiber horizontal and backbone cabling, patching, and telecom room reorganization.
This is an independent, customer-facing role working primarily in occupied facilities. The technician diagnoses and remediates cabling and connectivity issues, certifies work to BICSI/TIA standards, and supports small installations as part of the service department's scope. A core part of the role is patching new and relocated drops in coordination with the customer's IT support and bringing new IP devices live for customers who may not have on-site IT staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform MAC work: add, relocate, and extend copper and fiber drops; patch and re-patch; and reconfigure racks.
- Troubleshoot and remediate failed links, mislabels, continuity/mapping errors, and connectivity issues.
- Terminate copper (jacks, patch panels, 110/blocks) and fiber (splices, connectors, cassettes); splice as needed.
- Test and certify repaired and new links (e.g., Fluke DSX/CertiFiber) and submit results.
- Support small cabling installations and telecom room reorganizations.
- Patch new and relocated drops at the rack in coordination with the customer's IT support.
- Bring new IP endpoints live after adding drops — connecting and activating desk phones, conference-room systems, cameras, wireless access points, and similar devices — for customers who may not have on-site IT staff.
- Respond to service calls and coordinate with end-user IT and facilities teams.
- Label and document per TIA-606; update as-builts and cabling records.
- Identify and recommend repairs and upgrades; support time-and-materials quoting.
- Represent the company professionally in customer-occupied environments.
- Manage truck stock, tools, and test equipment.
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- 3+ years of structured cabling service, MAC, or installation experience.
- Proficiency terminating and testing both copper (Cat 6/6A) and fiber optic cabling.
- Working knowledge of BICSI/TIA standards, including TIA-568 and TIA-606 labeling.
- Experience with certification test equipment (e.g., Fluke DSX / CertiFiber) and interpreting results.
- Ability to work independently on small projects and service calls.
- Strong customer-service orientation and professional communication.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record; available for on-call as needed.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role.
Preferred
- BICSI Installer 1, Installer 2 (Copper/Optical Fiber), or Technician certification.
- Fusion splicing experience.
- Familiarity with approved manufacturer systems (e.g., Belden, Berk-Tek/Leviton, CommScope, Panduit).
- Experience in data center, healthcare, or large commercial environments.
- OSHA 10/30 certification.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is a field-based service role performed primarily in occupied, operational customer facilities, with frequent daily travel between multiple sites. The employee must be able to walk sites and uneven terrain; climb and work from ladders and aerial/scissor lifts; work in mechanical/electrical rooms, ceilings, and confined spaces; and stand, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly. The role includes participation in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours or weekend emergency response. Work is performed with appropriate PPE, and the technician is expected to conduct themselves professionally in customer-occupied environments. Must be able to detect, determine, distinguish, inspect, assess, and adjust focus, and distinguish colors for cable and conductor identification. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required.
