About this role

Tesla’s Supplier Industrialization team is responsible for critical component development, high volume industrialization and all part and process qualification activities at suppliers.  The job involves communicating well with internal and external teams, traveling to suppliers in different regions to streamline industrialization, and on-the-spot critical decision making. The goal: delivering on time quantities of high-quality component parts into Tesla’s production processes to enable extremely rapid development cycles and product launches. This role is specifically focused on being the machining Supplier Industrialization Engineer expert on the team. This includes reviewing the machining concepts presented by suppliers as well as tolerances proposed by internal design stakeholders for tooling and machining selection based on Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and maximizing chip to chip cutting efficiency for setting up a capable machining process at suppliers.

- Support critical component development and qualification activities as suppliers. Plan, organize, direct, and conduct industrialization-related activities within the supply chain team with a focus on CNC machining
- Develop, orchestrate, audit, improve, and correct supplier planning and execution of component manufacturing and assembly techniques, as well as quality control processes from the advanced development phase to mass production qualification
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) at Suppliers. Coordinate supplier improvements in scalability, cost, and quality
- Facilitate communication and clarification of technical requirements between suppliers and Tesla Purchasing, Quality, and Design teams
- Contribute to supplier audits to ensure their ability to meet part performance, delivery, and reliability expectations
- Collaborate with Tesla Design, Quality, and Manufacturing to determine the ideal performance specifications and supplier metrics. Coordinate, track, and improve supplier manufacturing process development and launch readiness for new products and design changes
- Guide suppliers in developing exceptionally robust processes and procedures to promote efficient and seamless production of high-quality products
- Validate supplier corrective actions involving design or process changes to ensure they are robust, sustainable, and implemented for similar potential concerns across manufacturing lines or suppliers

- Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering with 5+ years of related experience in a technology-based industry where CNC machining and automated methods are utilized in the production of precision components, or equivalent experience
- Deep knowledge of CNC machining processes including milling, turning, drilling, grinding, and multi-axis machining of metals (aluminum, steel, cast iron, titanium, etc.) and engineered materials
- Experience with CNC programming (G-code / M-code) and CAM software (MasterCAM, NX CAM, PowerMill) desired. Strong understanding of GD&T, metrology, and inspection methods (CMM, surface profilometry, in-process gauging)
- Experience in developing, executing, and interpreting results of Design of Experiments (DOE) for machining parameter optimization desired
- Proficient in the development and deployment of PFMEAs; new product introduction and manufacturing operations experience desired
- 2+ years of previous experience in supporting prototyping parts development with supplier partners for metal casting and/or aluminum extrusion desired. Must be familiar with SPC and data analysis, Possess demonstrable leadership abilities
- Ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment and has excellent team building skills in dealing with suppliers, peers and other functional areas
- Strong technical writing ability and an ability to explain complex issues in a concise and plain manner
