REPORTS TO: Senior Music Program Director

SALARY: $85.00 / hour

FLSA: Non-exempt

HOURS: Part-Time; Up to 6 hours per week, for 44 weeks/year. On occasion, up to 8 hours per week. Hours are subject to change with academic calendar and/or program needs. Rehearsals will be 1.5 - 2 hours per week.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Intergenerational Music Program, made possible by our partnership with The Eisner Foundation, brings together singers, big band, and orchestral musicians of all ages across intermediate and advanced skill levels in a multicultural environment that is representative of our great city. Performers benefit from interactions with each other while progressing toward a common goal of artistic excellence across a diverse musical repertoire. Our intergenerational music performances are designed to share the joy of music-making with performers and audience members through free community concerts at landmark venues.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Artistic Director reporting to the Senior Music Program Director, is responsible for giving instruction and guidance to program participants in their ensemble. The Artistic Director will provide a welcoming environment and help facilitate communal and musical growth through rehearsal plans designed to realize the mission of the program. The Artistic Director will work closely with the Program Manager and Department Director to plan and execute the seasons rehearsals, culminating in at least one performance per semester.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As Artistic Director, responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

- Collaborating with the Department Director and Program Manager to create a wonderful environment for advancement and experiencing the joy of music-making together as a community

- Leading rehearsals and performances for musicians of all ages

- Building a cohesive community among ensemble members, centered around Heart of LAs core values

- Offering advice to Section Mentors to ensure each section is meeting the same standards of musical excellence and community cohesion

- Communicating with EIWE musicians to understand each participant holistically

- Preparing, communicating, and collaborating with other administrative staff to ensure smooth programming

- Attending regular planning meetings and check points with direct supervisors and other program staff

- Collaborating with the Program Manager to ensure members are meeting compliance needs regarding attendance, background checks, etc.

- Collaborating with the Senior Director of Music to identify, select, rehearse and perform the ensemble's repertoire, and determine clear expectations and goals that contribute to the ensembles musical excellence

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS | TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED

- Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience a plus

- Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry

- Experience giving musical instruction; communal setting preferred

- Strong knowledge of repertoire, curriculum and pedagogy of wind ensembles

- Experience working with adults from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing

- Bilingual in English and Spanish or Korean preferred

- Must pass CA DOJ Background check

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION

This is a nonexempt position and is eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable law. Employees must accurately record all time worked and follow Heart of LAs timekeeping and overtime-authorization procedures.

SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM AVAILABILITY

This position requires availability to support Heart of LA programming and organizational needs. Regular work includes later hours on weekdays. The position may also require occasional schedule adjustments, or work on weekends, based on program activities, events, participant needs, and organizational priorities. All work time and scheduling will be administered in accordance with applicable law.
