Harrison Western was founded in 1968 and has provided superior construction services to the mining, heavy civil, geotechnical and tunneling industries for over 55 years. Additionally, Underground Infrastructure Technologies, LLC (UIT), a division of Harrison Western, is an underground utility contractor specializing in trenchless boring and tunneling technologies.

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Estimator and Design Engineer to join our team in our Lakewood, Colorado office or remotely if out of state. This position will work with other estimating professionals and often collaborate with operations, business development and executive leadership to drive proposal success, business development and organizational growth. Our work is both unique and diverse, and given the complex nature of these projects we are seeking an individual with extensive experience in mining, tunneling, heavy civil and/or the geotechnical field to execute and lead this critical function. The individual chosen for this role will have exceptional organizational skills and demonstrate a proven track record of developing and implementing processes, systems, and analysis programs. He or she will have well-developed leadership aptitude while utilizing their adaptability, flexibility, outstanding customer focus and strong communication skills to succeed in this position. The expectation is for this individual to hold primary ownership of the proposal and design development process on assigned projects and work with other estimators and engineers to coordinate estimates and activities. He or she will carefully manage the technologies and procedures to ensure delivery of high-quality proposals to win business. This will require working closely with key individuals from business development, operations, and leadership to deliver technical components of these detailed documents and presentations and carry the project estimate and/or technical proposal through to completion.

Position Description:

The Senior Estimator and Design Engineer position works with other estimators/engineers and acts as the more senior team member delegating some tasks while also working on their own deliverables.   This position is responsible for managing and executing estimates, designs and project proposals for mining, tunneling and/or geotechnical construction projects.  Aptitude for developing and executing internal processes and utilizing input from a variety of sources and functions is critical to success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (including the following: other duties may be assigned)

- Determine, develop and execute estimating processes, strategies, technologies, plans and procedures

- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, subcontractors, suppliers, trade partners and clients, including government entities

- Prepare bid proposals and estimates by accurately calculating complete takeoff of project scope

- Review design and execution options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality and availability of materials and equipment to meet design intent

- Analyze drawings, engineering designs, specifications, and tender documentation to prepare schedules, means & methods, value engineering opportunities, cost estimates and proposal documentation

- Maintain detailed tracking of jobs bid and awarded for historical data use and trend information

- Assist staff with determining production rates, crews and fleet for estimates

- Review all assigned estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to submission of bid documents.

- Lead the Internal Bid Review process including collaborative work sessions, iterative reviews and final executive presentations

- Participate in bid related presentations and submittal of qualification information

- Support general Marketing and Business Development efforts

- Implement and follow department standards and procedures

- Regularly interface with the business development team to ensure alignment, information sharing, an internal feedback loop and implementation of strategy leveraging data wherever possible

- Manage and participate in the project handoff process with Operations and participate in the post-completion debrief following every project

- Assist and support project management to ensure continuity between tender, construction and project completion

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Construction Management, Engineering or similar or equivalent in industry experience in Mining, Heavy Civil, Tunneling, and/or Geotechnical fields

- PE Licensure

- Five years construction operations experience, estimating or similar role including exposure to project operations.

- Experience collaborating with others in a fast-paced industry.

- Detail oriented to organize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

- Experience performing geotechnical analyses

- Familiarity with building/estimating techniques and software: B2W, On-Screen Takeoff (OST), Bluebeam/PDF, Google Earth, MS Office Suite

- Familiarity with AutoCAD and developing design and/or construction drawings

- General knowledge and understanding of the RFP process

- Proven positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills

- Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in Mining, Construction Management, Engineering and industry experience in Mining, Heavy Civil, Tunneling, and/or Geotechnical fields

- Ten years’ construction operations experience, estimating or similar role including exposure to project operations, including five years of field experience in the geotechnical/geohazards construction field

- Strong knowledge and understanding of the RFP process, capable of developing proposals with little to no oversight

- Proficiency with AutoCAD and developing design and/or construction drawings with little to no oversight

Compensation and Benefits:

- Salary range of $95,000 - $130,000/year DOE
