Job Description

As a Graduate Highway Engineer , you’ll be supported by experienced engineers who will provide guidance and mentoring as you develop your technical knowledge and professional skills. You’ll work on live projects and receive structured training to help you build a strong foundation in highway engineering and infrastructure design.

Your initial responsibilities will typically include supporting the development of highway designs and technical solutions through different project stages, attending site visits, meetings and workshops, and working collaboratively with clients and other design professionals.

You’ll receive training in relevant engineering, design and digital engineering software, which may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other highway design and modelling software, depending on project requirements. You’ll also develop your understanding of digital engineering and BIM processes and how these are applied to the design and delivery of infrastructure projects.

As your experience and confidence grow, you’ll take on increasing responsibility for project tasks and technical deliverables, with opportunities to contribute to projects from inception through to completion.

You may gain experience across a variety of projects, including:

- Highway and road design
- Geometric alignment and highway layout design
- Junction and intersection design
- Urban and rural highway schemes
- Active travel and cycle infrastructure
- Bus priority and public transport infrastructure
- Road drainage and associated infrastructure
- Earthworks and highway infrastructure
- Pavement design and maintenance
- Traffic management and temporary works
- Road safety and highway assessments
- Feasibility studies and options development
- Development of technical drawings, reports and specifications
- Construction-stage support and site inspections
- Multidisciplinary infrastructure and transportation projects

Our Highway Engineering graduates also have opportunities to work alongside our Traffic Engineering and Transportation teams on major infrastructure projects. Working collaboratively across different disciplines provides exposure to a broad range of projects and helps you develop a well-rounded understanding of transportation, highway design and infrastructure delivery.

Qualifications

- BEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering, with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above
- An MEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering, with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above, would be an advantage
- Relevant modules, coursework or experience in highways, infrastructure or transportation would be an advantage
- Enthusiastic, hard-working and technically proficient, with ambition and drive
- Good report writing and technical communication skills would be beneficial
- Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the wider team
- Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently, while demonstrating initiative and focus
- Good communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to colleagues, clients and other stakeholders
- Willingness to develop professionally and work towards relevant professional accreditation or chartership
