Job Purpose
The Environmental Process Technician is responsible for supporting wastewater treatment operations, environmental compliance, environmental monitoring and Production Services activities across the Midleton and Dungourney sites. The role plays a key part in ensuring compliance with EPA licence requirements, maintaining the performance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), supporting sustainability initiatives and coordinating key site facilities services. The position offers an opportunity for an environmental professional with an interest in water and wastewater management to further develop technical expertise in an operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Wastewater Treatment & Water Management
- Operate, monitor and support the day-to-day performance of the Midleton Distillery Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
- Monitor wastewater treatment processes, analyse plant performance data and identify opportunities for optimisation and continuous improvement.
- Monitor wastewater and stormwater management systems to ensure environmental compliance and operational effectiveness.
- Investigate, troubleshoot and escalate treatment plant or environmental system deviations in accordance with site procedures.
- Support wastewater sampling, testing, reporting and regulatory compliance activities.
- Monitor, maintain and verify environmental monitoring equipment, including TOC monitoring systems.
- Support water reduction, water reuse and water recycling projects across site operations.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving environmental performance and resource efficiency.
Environmental Compliance & Monitoring
- Coordinate environmental compliance testing associated with licensed site activities.
- Maintain accurate environmental records and support regulatory reporting requirements.
- Prepare and contribute to environmental reports and submissions to the EPA and other relevant authorities.
- Support EPA, NSAI and other environmental audits and inspections.
- Ensure compliance with EPA licence requirements, environmental permits and site procedures.
- Support compliance with ISO 14001, ISO 22000, ISO 50001 and FEMAS standards.
- Analyse environmental data and make recommendations to support environmental and operational performance improvements.
Operations, Permits & Team Support
- Act as Permit Authority within the site Permit-to-Work and Lockout/Tagout systems.
- Review, maintain and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Occupational Risk Assessments (ORAs) and Work Instructions.
- Support and supervise Production Services activities, including weighbridge operations, grain intake, chemical deliveries and feed outloading.
- Deputise for the Environment & Facilities Manager as required.
- Participate in the site out-of-hours on-call support rota.
Facilities Operations & Coordination
- Coordinate day-to-day facilities services including security, waste management, cleaning, catering, landscaping and general site upkeep activities.
- Monitor facilities issues and coordinate resolution with contractors and service providers.
- Support maintenance activities relating to site facilities and infrastructure.
- Maintain effective communication with internal stakeholders to ensure service delivery standards are achieved.
Sustainability, Biodiversity & Continuous Improvement
- Support biodiversity, sustainability and environmental improvement programmes.
- Participate in waste reduction, resource efficiency and carbon reduction initiatives.
- Promote a strong safety-first culture across the Environmental & Production Services function.
- Identify opportunities to improve environmental performance, operational efficiency and compliance standards.
Essential Qualifications, Experience & Skills
- Third-level qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience working within a regulated manufacturing, food and beverage, utilities, pharmaceutical or industrial environment.
- Experience supporting environmental compliance, monitoring and reporting activities.
- Strong understanding of environmental management principles and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret environmental and operational data.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working safely with chemical agents and environmental systems.
- Demonstrated interest in wastewater treatment, water management or environmental process operations.
Preferred Qualifications, Experience & Skills
- Experience operating, monitoring or supporting an industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, biological treatment systems, water management and environmental control systems.
- Experience working within an EPA-licensed facility.
- Experience supporting environmental audits and inspections.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001, ISO 22000, ISO 50001 and FEMAS management systems.
- Experience acting as Permit Authority within a Permit-to-Work system.
- Experience supporting sustainability, biodiversity, water conservation or resource efficiency programmes.
