DESCRIPTION

Join our Mass Spectrometry R&D team at Thermo Fisher Scientific and help develop innovative software solutions for advanced analytical instruments used by scientists around the world.

As a Software Engineer III, you will design, develop and maintain embedded software applications that control and support our Mass Spectrometry instruments. You will work at the intersection of software, instrumentation and science, solving technically challenging problems and turning complex technical and scientific requirements into robust software solutions.

Working in an international R&D environment and collaborating across several locations in Europe, you will partner with software and hardware engineers, scientists and domain experts to contribute to the development of our next generation of analytical instruments.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Design, develop, test and maintain Python software for Mass Spectrometry instruments
• Develop software for embedded Linux-based systems and instrument control
• Collaborate with hardware, software and scientific teams to understand and clarify technical requirements and translate them into effective software solutions
• Investigate and solve complex software, communication and instrument-level problems
• Contribute to software architecture, code reviews, automated testing and engineering best practices
• Participate in DevOps and continuous integration processes
• Collaborate with colleagues across international R&D teams and contribute to continuous improvement of our products and development practices

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• University degree in a technical field with 2+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent practical experience in software development related to embedded software, scientific applications or other technically complex products
• Strong proficiency in Python development
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Experience with version control systems such as Git and familiarity with modern software development and DevOps practices
• Ability to understand, clarify and translate complex technical and scientific requirements into software solutions
• Good written and spoken English and the ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional and international teams
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a development team
• Willingness to travel occasionally (up to 5%) for collaboration with colleagues in EU

NICE TO HAVE

• Experience with C++
• Experience developing software in a Linux environment
• Knowledge of networking and communication protocols
• Experience with communication buses and hardware/software interfaces
• Experience with embedded systems or scientific instrumentation
• Familiarity with automated testing and continuous integration
