About the Role
Are you an experienced, commercially minded logistics leader with an open management style and a track record of driving operational excellence?
We are seeking a Night Operations Manager to take full accountability for our Regional Service Centre (RSC) during the night shift, spanning both Warehouse and Transport operations. Leading through a team of Team Managers, Supervisors, and Colleagues, you will drive night-shift performance across safety, service, cost, and productivity.
In this high-autonomy role, you will champion a safe, compliant, and engaged environment—managing seasonal budgets, optimising unit costs (CPU), ensuring transport regulatory compliance ('O' Licence), and embedding a culture of continuous improvement across the site.
Key Responsibilities
Shift Leadership & Operational Performance
- Total RSC Accountability: Take full ownership of on-shift Warehouse and Transport operations to ensure site service, productivity, and financial targets are met.
- Budget & CPU Management: Assist in preparing seasonal budgets, manage shift resources to control cost per unit (CPU), and explain reforecast variances.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Coordinate closely across warehouse, transport, and wider network teams to ensure smooth intake, picking, dispatch, and delivery.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- H&S Leadership: Drive a zero-harm culture and maintain 100% compliance on Health & Safety and site housekeeping audits.
- Incident Management: Lead thorough accident investigations, implement immediate corrective actions, and conduct regular compliance floor walks.
- Transport Regulations: Ensure complete adherence to Operator (‘O’) Licence requirements and transport legislation across night transport operations.
People Management & Culture
- Team Development: Line manage 5+ Managers/Supervisors and 15+ colleagues—conducting formal performance reviews, return-to-works, 1:1s, and setting Personal Development Plans.
- Employee Relations: Manage first-stage HR procedures (investigations, absence management, disciplinaries, and consultations) within a unionised environment.
- Engagement & Communication: Deliver daily shift briefings, ensure thorough handovers, and foster a Fun, Fair, and Rewarding culture that recognises and celebrates success.
What You’ll Bring
- Commercial Logistics Experience: 3+ years of commercial management experience in a fast-paced, service-focused distribution environment.
- Dual-Operation Leadership: Proven experience managing both Warehouse and Transport operations, with strong knowledge of 'O' Licence regulations and pre-retail workflows.
- Financial & Analytical Acumen: Experience with CPU management, budgeting, productivity tracking tools, and data analysis (advanced MS Excel/Office skills).
- Unionised Environment Leadership: Track record managing HR/employee relations and working constructively within unionised operational frameworks.
- Educational Background: National CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) desirable; GCSE Maths & English (Grade C/4 or above); Degree or equivalent qualification preferred.
- Personal Attributes: Resilient under pressure, articulate, persuasive communicator, and an open, coaching-focused leader.

- Autonomy to shape shift strategy, team development, and operational continuous improvement.
- Comprehensive benefits package including pension scheme, health support, and staff discounts.
- Professional growth and senior leadership opportunities across our distribution network.
