Job Title: Senior Environmental Project Manager / Environmental Engineer (PE) Job Description
This role leads complex brownfield redevelopment and commercial site development projects as a Senior environmental project manager and professional engineer. You will oversee environmental due diligence, site investigations, remediation planning and execution, regulatory compliance, and client management across the full project lifecycle for commercial, industrial, mixed-use, retail, logistics, and municipal developments. You will serve as a technical leader and project manager, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to transform environmentally impacted properties into successful redevelopment opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Manage multiple brownfield redevelopment projects from initial site acquisition through regulatory closure, ensuring successful outcomes for commercial, industrial, mixed-use, retail, logistics, and municipal developments.
- Develop comprehensive project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource plans that align with client objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Lead and direct project teams while maintaining strict quality, safety, budget, and schedule standards throughout all phases of work.
- Coordinate internal staff, subcontractors, remediation contractors, laboratories, and specialty consultants to deliver integrated project solutions.
- Monitor and manage project financial performance, including forecasting, invoicing, and profitability, and proactively address variances.
- Oversee and review Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) in accordance with ASTM E1527 and related standards.
- Oversee and review Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), ensuring appropriate sampling strategies and accurate interpretation of results.
- Manage environmental investigations involving soil, groundwater, sediment, and vapor intrusion, including planning, field oversight, and data evaluation.
- Interpret environmental data and develop clear recommendations regarding environmental risks, liabilities, and redevelopment constraints.
- Evaluate recognized environmental conditions (RECs) and identify how they may impact redevelopment plans and site design.
- Develop and implement remediation strategies for contaminated properties, aligning remedial approaches with risk-based and regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate remedial alternatives and support risk-based corrective action programs, including development of conceptual site models and remedy selection.
- Oversee remediation activities such as soil excavation, groundwater treatment, soil vapor extraction, environmental monitoring, and implementation of institutional and engineering controls.
- Review remediation system design and performance reports, and recommend optimizations or modifications to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with regulatory agencies, coordinating reviews of corrective action plans, remedial action work plans, closure reports, and permit applications.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations and guidance across all assigned projects.
- Support regulatory negotiations and secure project approvals by preparing technical documentation and participating in regulatory meetings.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with commercial developers, industrial clients, municipalities, attorneys, and lenders to support ongoing and future projects.
- Participate in business development activities, including preparing proposals, qualifications packages, and delivering client presentations.
- Manage client relationships and communications for assigned projects, ensuring clear expectations, timely updates, and high client satisfaction.
- Mentor and develop junior staff, providing technical guidance, project oversight, and professional development support.
- Provide technical leadership across environmental projects, leveraging your expertise in investigation, remediation, and compliance.
- Support strategic growth initiatives within environmental and remediation practices by identifying opportunities and contributing to service development.
- Prepare and review technical reports, regulatory submittals, and project documentation, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance.
- Utilize GIS and other tools to interpret and present environmental data for internal decision-making and client communications.
- Develop and manage detailed project schedules, coordinating tasks and resources to meet milestones and deadlines.
- Contribute to portfolio-level management of multi-site environmental programs, where applicable, ensuring consistent quality and performance.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) license in good standing.
- At least 8 years of experience in environmental consulting, remediation, or brownfield redevelopment.
- Demonstrated experience managing environmental investigation and remediation projects from planning through closure.
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and remediation programs.
- Proven ability to manage project budgets, schedules, and client relationships effectively.
- Strong project management skills, including scope development, resource planning, and financial oversight.
- Experience with Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), including ASTM E1527-compliant work.
- Experience with Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), including soil and groundwater investigation and data interpretation.
- Technical expertise in remediation design and management, including soil excavation, groundwater treatment, and soil vapor extraction.
- Experience in environmental compliance, risk assessment, and regulatory reporting.
- Proficiency in environmental monitoring, soil sampling, and site assessment techniques.
- Ability to provide technical guidance while coordinating work across multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and client presentations.
- Valid drivers license and willingness to perform occasional field visits.
- Experience working with a wide range of environmental remediation projects for commercial buildings.
- Strong project management and customer acquisition experience, with responsibility for managing client relationships and communications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 10 or more years of environmental consulting experience, particularly in remediation and brownfield redevelopment.
- Brownfield redevelopment experience supporting commercial, industrial, mixed-use, retail, or logistics development projects.
- Experience with EPA Brownfields Programs and associated funding or regulatory frameworks.
- Experience working on CERCLA/Superfund sites and related investigation and cleanup programs.
- Experience with RCRA Corrective Action programs and regulatory requirements.
- Experience in Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) and Voluntary Cleanup Programs.
- Experience managing multi-site environmental portfolios or program-level environmental work.
- Existing relationships with developers, municipalities, or industrial clients that support business development.
- PMP certification or advanced project management training.
- Technical proficiency in environmental science and environmental engineering principles.
- Experience in industrial hygiene and related environmental health assessments.
- Strong skills in environmental compliance, regulatory reporting, and documentation preparation.
- Demonstrated ability in budget management, project scheduling, and proposal development.
- Experience with GIS and environmental data interpretation for analysis and presentation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with environmental scientists, geologists, hydrogeologists, civil engineers, remediation contractors, and regulatory agencies.
Work Environment
The role is primarily based in an office setting with regular collaboration across multidisciplinary project teams and occasional site visits to commercial, industrial, and redevelopment properties. Site visits may involve observing environmental investigations, remediation activities, and monitoring programs. You will work with a variety of environmental technologies and tools, including GIS and data management systems, as well as standard field and sampling equipment when visiting project sites. Typical working hours follow standard business office schedules, with flexibility to accommodate project deadlines, client meetings, and regulatory interactions as needed. Job Type & Location
This is a Permanent position based out of North Charleston, SC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $105000.00 - $140000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
