Controls Specialist - Position Overview
Perform installation, troubleshooting, calibration, and preventive maintenance on facility control systems including PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFDs, sensors, and instrumentation. Support all controls CM & PM work, improvement/efficiency and automation projects for critical utility and building systems. This controls specialist role is essential for maintaining, continuously improving and driving reliability within the infrastructure that enables continuous, safe and high-yield semiconductor manufacturing. As the system specialist, you are the system owner for all North Campus factory controls systems.
Responsibilities include:
- Respond quickly to potentially critical situations, perform rapid and accurate situational assessments, and troubleshoot system components
- Identify causes of failures, determine appropriate corrective actions, and implement these corrections promptly to mitigate the effects of system upsets
- Review recommended maintenance procedures to ensure best practices are in place and documented properly
- Review, draft, improve and implement standard operation procedures (SOP) on all related systems
- Provide technical support for 24-hour operations team
- Troubleshoot and maintain PLC/HMI/SCADA programs and hardware for chillers, pumps, cooling towers, AHUs, and process utilities
- Perform PM/CM on control panels, relays, motor controls, VFDs, and instrumentation per FMS work orders
- Calibrate & repair transmitters, pressure/temperature sensors, flow meters, and control valves
- Support PLC upgrades, program changes, and control logic reviews; document changes per change control
- Design and maintain control systems networks and hardware
- Respond to alarms, perform root-cause analysis, and coordinate with operations and engineering
- Maintain as-built documentation, loop diagrams, and spare parts records
- Ensure safety compliance, LOTO, and EHS requirements during all work
- Manage and coordinate contractors & TI’ers supporting the controls team
- Lead improvement, efficiency and automation efforts/projects
- Train & mentor new technicians to support the controls team and ensure TI expectations are met
- Interface directly with facility and factory managers
- Review, assess risks and approve/deny controls related work permits
- Maintain service/replacement parts, request quotes and manage vendors
Minimum requirements:
- High School diploma/GED
- 10 years’ experience with industrial controls, PLC programming/logic troubleshooting, and instrumentation
- Willingness to handle call-in situations after hours
Preferred qualifications:
- Familiarity with Rockwell/Allen Bradley, Siemens, or similar PLC platforms; HMI/SCADA experience
- Ability to read P&IDs, electrical schematics, and loop diagrams
- Strong documentation skills, safety mindset and excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to read, understand, and update mechanical, electrical, chemical, and controls system drawings
- Computer/software skills - Outlook, Excel, Word, SAP, and AutoCAD
- Self-starter requiring little direction to identify and solve problems
- Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time management skills
- Ability to interface professionally and effectively with all levels
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Team and project management experience
- Familiarity with all North Texas TI Sites, protocols, controls platforms and requirements
