Workday Technical Consultant

Senior / Lead Level

Function: HCM Technology & Integrations   |   Experience: 7+ years   |   Employment Type: Full-time]

Role Summary

We are seeking a Senior Workday Technical Consultant to own the design, build, and support of Workday integrations and technical configuration across a complex, multi-module HCM landscape. This is a hands-on engineering role with client-facing design authority: you will translate functional HR requirements into resilient, secure, well-documented technical solutions, and act as the escalation point for the most complex integration and data problems.

Beyond traditional integration work, the role carries responsibility for the emerging AI layer of the Workday ecosystem — extending the platform with agentic and AI-assisted automation, exposing Workday data safely to intelligent systems, and establishing the engineering standards that keep those solutions auditable and compliant.

Key Responsibilities

Integration Design & Development

- Architect and build integrations — using Workday Studio, Core Connectors, EIB, Cloud Connect, Document Transformation, and Workday Orchestrate, selecting the right tool for each scenario rather than defaulting to one.

- Develop against Workday Web Services — consuming SOAP APIs (Human_Resources, Staffing, Absence Management, Payroll, Compensation, Recruiting, Talent, Financial Management) and the Workday REST/RaaS APIs, including version management across tenant updates.

- Build and optimise custom reports — advanced, matrix, composite, and BIRT reports, and expose them as RaaS endpoints with correctly scoped security and efficient data-source filtering.

- Own inbound and outbound data flows — with third-party systems: payroll providers, benefits carriers, ticketing platforms, IAM/SSO, learning systems, background-check and financial systems.

- Implement transformation logic — XSLT, XPath, MVEL, and ETL routines to meet partner file specifications and complex mapping requirements.

Platform Configuration & Security

- Configure and maintain the security model — domain and business process security policies, Integration System Users (ISUs), Integration System Security Groups (ISSGs), and least-privilege access design.

- Design and troubleshoot business processes — condition rules, validations, calculated fields, and custom objects across HCM functional areas.

- Manage tenant lifecycle activities — sandbox refreshes, Workday release readiness (Release 1 and Release 2 regression testing), and integration impact assessments.

- Enforce data quality and governance — including PII handling, encryption (PGP), certificate and credential rotation, and audit-ready logging.

Delivery, Support & Leadership

- Lead technical discovery and solution design sessions — with HR, Payroll, IT, and external vendors; produce design documents, interface specifications, and data mapping matrices.

- Own the full SDLC — unit testing, integration testing, UAT support, cutover planning, hypercare, and production handover.

- Provide L3 production support — root-cause analysis on integration failures, performance tuning of long-running integrations, and permanent fixes over workarounds.

- Mentor consultants and analysts — conduct code and design reviews, and establish reusable frameworks, naming standards, and error-handling patterns across the team.

- Produce and maintain technical documentation — runbooks, architecture diagrams, and knowledge-transfer material to a standard that a new engineer can operate from unaided.

AI & Intelligent Automation

- Extend Workday with AI-driven automation — using Workday Extend and the Workday Build / AI developer toolset to deliver agentic and AI-assisted processes on top of core HCM data.

- Expose Workday data to AI systems safely — implementing agent-facing interfaces (including MCP-based connectivity) that inherit the tenant security model, respect data residency, and produce complete audit trails.

- Build and evaluate conversational and agentic HR workflows — intent handling, entity extraction, tool/action orchestration, fallback and human-in-the-loop escalation paths.

- Apply governance to AI solutions — bias, hallucination and data-leakage controls; prompt and output evaluation; compliance alignment against frameworks such as the OWASP LLM Top 10, NIST AI RMF, and EU AI Act obligations.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

- 7+ years of Workday technical experience — with at least 3 years at a senior or lead level, including full-cycle implementations and post-production support.

- Expert-level Workday Studio — complex assemblies, custom Java/MVEL components, error handling, retry and restart logic, and performance tuning.

- Deep Workday Web Services knowledge — hands-on SOAP and REST development, WSDL interpretation, request/response debugging, and API version migration.

- Strong Workday Report Writer skills — advanced/matrix/composite reporting, calculated fields, and RaaS design.

- Proven integration tooling breadth — EIB, Core Connectors, Cloud Connect for Third Party Payroll/Benefits, Document Transformation, and Workday Orchestrate.

- Workday security administration — ISU/ISSG design, domain and BP security policies, and tenant-to-tenant configuration migration.

- Strong XML, XSLT, XPath, JSON, and SQL — plus at least one general-purpose language (Java, Python, or JavaScript/Node.js).

- Integration and API fundamentals — REST/SOAP design, OAuth 2.0, SAML/SSO, x509 certificates, SFTP/PGP, webhooks, and message queues.

- Excellent client-facing communication — able to run a design workshop with HR stakeholders and a technical deep-dive with an engineering team on the same day.

- Active Workday Partner certification (or equivalent verified enablement) in Integrations or Extend.

Preferred Qualifications

- Workday Extend, Prism Analytics, Adaptive Planning, or Workday Data Cloud experience.

- Additional Workday certifications — HCM Core, Payroll, Absence, Time Tracking, Compensation, or Recruiting.

- Experience with iPaaS and middleware platforms — MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, Workato, Azure Logic Apps, or similar.

- Global payroll or multi-country HCM rollout experience — including localisation and statutory reporting requirements.

- Cloud and DevOps exposure — AWS/Azure/GCP, CI/CD pipelines, Git-based version control, and infrastructure-as-code.

- Familiarity with adjacent HR technology — ServiceNow HRSD, SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM, Zoho Desk, or HR case-management and ticketing platforms.

- Experience in a consulting, systems-integrator, or HR-tech product environment with multiple concurrent clients.

Emerging Technology Skills (Strongly Preferred)

We are actively building AI-enabled capability into our HCM practice. Candidates who bring any of the following will be prioritised, and the role includes dedicated scope to develop these skills further.

AI Platform & Agent Engineering

- Workday AI ecosystem — Workday Illuminate, Workday Build, Extend-based AI apps, and Workday's agent developer tooling.

- Model Context Protocol (MCP) — building and consuming MCP servers/tools to expose enterprise systems to AI agents with scoped, auditable permissions.

- Agent orchestration frameworks — LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel, or equivalent; multi-step tool use, state management, and agent-to-agent (A2A) patterns.

- Large language model integration — working with the OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, or Azure OpenAI APIs, including function/tool calling and structured output.

- Prompt engineering and context design — system prompt architecture, few-shot design, output schema enforcement, and token/cost optimisation.

Data, Retrieval & Evaluation

- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) — chunking strategy, embedding models, vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector, Azure AI Search), and hybrid/re-ranked retrieval.

- Knowledge base engineering — turning HR policy, SOP, and tenant documentation into grounded, permission-aware retrieval corpora.

- Evaluation and observability — building test sets and regression suites for AI outputs; tracing and monitoring with tools such as LangSmith, Langfuse, or equivalent.

- Modern data tooling — Apache Iceberg / lakehouse table formats, dbt, Snowflake or Databricks, and streaming or event-driven data patterns.

Automation & Responsible AI

- Low-code and workflow automation platforms — agentic workflow builders, Power Automate, n8n, or comparable orchestration studios.

- Intelligent document processing — OCR, structured extraction, and classification applied to HR documents and case attachments.

- AI security and governance — prompt injection and data-exfiltration defence, PII redaction, output guardrails, and model/agent access control.

- AI-assisted development practice — fluency with coding agents and copilots (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) as part of day-to-day engineering delivery.

Core Competencies

- Analytical rigour — diagnoses root cause rather than treating symptoms, and can reason about failure modes before they occur.

- Ownership — takes an issue from report to permanent fix, including the documentation and the prevention.

- Translation — moves fluently between HR functional language and technical design without losing precision in either direction.

- Pragmatism — chooses the simplest solution that meets the requirement and is maintainable by the next person.

- Continuous learning — stays current with each Workday release and with a fast-moving AI toolchain, and shares what they learn.

If you’ve got the skills to succeed and the motivation to make it happen, we look forward to hearing from you.
