WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Per Scholas is seeking an industry experience Low-Voltage Fiber Technician Instructor to deliver a hands-on training program that prepares entry-level adult learners for careers in fiber optics, structured cabling, low-voltage installation, telecommunications infrastructure, data center cabling, and security and fire alarm systems installation.
The ideal candidate is a safety-minded, field-experienced technical trainer who can teach learners how to install, terminate, test, certify, document, and troubleshoot copper and fiber cabling systems across residential, commercial, construction, and data center environments. This person should be comfortable leading physical labs, modeling professional jobsite expectations, supporting certification preparation, and using AI-enabled tools to strengthen technical troubleshooting, documentation, and learner readiness.
To succeed in this role, the instructor must combine strong technical credibility with learner-centered instructional practice, clear communication, attention to safety, and the ability to translate real-world field experience into structured classroom labs, workplace simulations, and job-aligned assessments.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Deliver instructor-led technical training for UCI 1019: AI-Enhanced Low-Voltage Fiber Technician, preparing learners for entry-level roles such as Fiber Optic Technician, Low Voltage Technician, Network Cabling Technician, Data Center Cabling Technician, Telecommunications Installer, and Security and Fire Alarm Systems Installer / Technician.
- Facilitate daily hands-on labs in structured copper cabling, fiber optic installation, cable pulling, cable dressing, labeling, termination, splicing, testing, certification, troubleshooting, and documentation.
- Teach learners to install, terminate, certify, and troubleshoot Cat5E, Cat6, and Cat6A copper cabling systems using industry standards, structured cabling practices, patch panels, keystone jacks, punch-down blocks, and cable testing equipment.
- Teach fiber optic concepts and field practices, including single-mode and multimode fiber applications, connector inspection, pre-polished splice methods, fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, optical power meter and light source testing, insertion loss measurement, OTDR interpretation, and as-built documentation.
- Model jobsite safety practices and support learner preparation for OSHA 10 General Industry and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety expectations in low-voltage, construction, and field-service environments.
- Lead construction-adjacent labs involving construction math, jobsite readiness, hand and power tool safety, drilling, anchors, mounting, drywall rough-in, EMT conduit bending, cable tray/pathway systems, and low-voltage device placement.
- Support learner preparation for the FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) exam through guided review, practical labs, knowledge checks, and targeted remediation.
- Teach applied network fundamentals for low-voltage technicians, including OSI model connections to physical infrastructure, basic switch connectivity, VLAN and PoE concepts, WAP deployment, ping/traceroute verification, and port/device documentation.
- Facilitate low-voltage systems integration labs involving CCTV/video surveillance, PoE cameras, wireless access points, IP-connected devices, access control diagrams, audio/visual systems, labeling, and endpoint verification.
- Integrate ITSM and ServiceNow concepts into workplace simulations, including ticket intake, troubleshooting notes, escalation, documentation, service-level expectations, and professional communication.
- Use AI-enabled tools and responsible prompting practices to help learners interpret OTDR traces, diagnose field anomalies, generate troubleshooting checklists, produce as-built records, summarize technical lessons, and draft professional stakeholder communications.
- Apply Per Scholas’ flipped classroom and workplace simulation approach by assigning foundational pre-work and using class time for applied labs, jobsite scenarios, peer review, troubleshooting challenges, and capstone project work.
- Administer quizzes, practical labs, skills assessments, certification readiness activities, capstone deliverables, attendance, participation tracking, and learner performance documentation.
- Provide individual and small-group coaching, remediation, feedback, and progress monitoring to support learner persistence, technical growth, professionalism, and job readiness.
- Maintain accurate learner records in Salesforce, Canvas LMS, and/or other required platforms, including attendance, grades, certification progress, lab completion, and progress notes.
- Collaborate with Professional Development, Learner Support, Business Solutions, Technology, and Product teams to support learner success, employer alignment, classroom readiness, and continuous improvement of course materials.
- Maintain classroom and lab readiness, including safe setup, use, inventory, storage, and care of tools, cabling materials, network devices, fiber equipment, PPE, and other course resources.
- Support curriculum updates, lab improvements, assessment refinement, and documentation that keep the course aligned with current employer expectations, field practices, and industry standards.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO US
Instructional Skill Sets
- 1-3 years of teaching, training, mentoring, apprenticeship instruction, field coaching, or technical facilitation experience preferred.
- Ability to teach adult learners with little to no prior technical background using clear explanations, demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and job-relevant examples.
- Strong classroom and lab management skills, including the ability to manage safety, pacing, learner engagement, equipment use, and hands-on practice in an in-person or hybrid environment.
- Ability to create an inclusive, supportive, and accountable learning environment that mirrors professional workplace expectations.
- Experience using learning management systems, digital collaboration tools, video conferencing platforms, and productivity tools such as Canvas, Zoom, Slack, Microsoft Office 365, and/or similar platforms.
- Ability to use AI-enabled tools responsibly for instructional support, troubleshooting practice, documentation, learner coaching, and productivity while reinforcing professional judgment and verification.
Required Skill Sets
- Hands-on experience with low-voltage installation, telecommunications infrastructure, structured cabling, fiber optic cabling, data center cabling, network cabling, security systems, fire alarm systems, AV systems, or a closely related field.
- Working knowledge of copper cabling installation and termination, including Cat5E, Cat6, Cat6A, patch panels, keystone jacks, RJ45 connectors, 568A/568B wiring schemes, cable dressing, labeling, testing, and basic fault isolation.
- Working knowledge of fiber optic cabling concepts and field practices, including single-mode and multimode fiber, connectors, splicing, connector inspection, optical loss testing, and OTDR-based troubleshooting.
- Ability to demonstrate safe and correct use of common low-voltage and construction tools, including wire strippers, crimpers, punch-down tools, cable testers/certifiers, multimeters, drills, anchors, hand benders, fish tape, and related jobsite equipment.
- Understanding of cable pathway systems and field installation practices, including EMT conduit, cable tray, drywall rough-in, mounting, cable support, bend radius, pulling tension, and jobsite housekeeping.
- Understanding of low-voltage safety, PPE, hazard identification, electrical safety awareness, and jobsite protocols aligned to OSHA 10 General Industry and NFPA 70E.
- Ability to teach basic network fundamentals for physical infrastructure work, including PoE, WAPs, managed switches, VLAN basics, IP-connected devices, ping/traceroute testing, and port mapping.
- Ability to document work professionally through cable schedules, test results, as-built records, tickets, diagrams, service notes, and client-facing updates.
Preferred Skill Sets
- Experience with Network Devices, firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless access points,
- Experience with troubleshooting hardware/software i.e., ‘ Computer Break/Fix’
- Experience with supporting Rack Servers Dell PowerEdge / HP Proliant
- The ability to write content and curriculum related to instructional outcomes is a plus
- Ability to train and secure Cisco Network Essentials certification
- Operating Systems Support
Professional Qualifications
- FOA CFOT certification strongly preferred; candidates without CFOT must be willing and able to obtain the credential within an agreed onboarding timeline.
- OSHA 10 General Industry required or must be secured during onboarding.
- NFPA 70E Electrical Safety training required or must be secured during onboarding.
- ServiceNow and/or ITSM familiarity preferred; willingness to complete assigned ServiceNow / ITSM training during onboarding is required.
- Valid low-voltage, fiber optic, telecom, electrical, security, fire alarm, data center, networking, or construction-related credentials are a plus
- Experience as a corporate trainer or prior instructional experience
- Knowledge of industry-standard cable specifications
- Familiarity with low-voltage topology (MDF, IDF, CDF)
- Low Voltage support and experience in a data center environment
- Knowledge of OSHA certification and on-site safety regulations must secure certification during onboarding.

Compensation
For this role specifically, we are targeting a hourly range of $40.00 - $45.00 where the difference in salary is typically determined by several factors, including geography in which the selected candidate resides, and alignment with qualifications and experience.
