About this role

Position Summary

The Telecom Service Technician installs, terminates, tests, and maintains telecom cabling and related systems in residential and commercial environments supporting voice, data, and low-voltage systems for new or existing customers at various job sites. This field position works with copper and fiber optic cabling, pathways, and related infrastructure to deliver reliable, code-compliant cabling systems.

Key Responsibilities

- Install, disconnect, and reconnect coaxial, copper, ADSL/DSL, and fiber optic services for residential and commercial customers.

- Complete triple-play installations of television, telephone, and high-speed internet, including set-top boxes, gateways, ONTs, routers, and related customer premises equipment.

- Pull, terminate, splice, and test coax, twisted-pair copper, and fiber optic cable to company and manufacturer specifications.

- Test and certify installed cabling using certification testers, OTDRs, and related test equipment; document and report results.

- Identify obvious installation or connectivity issues during a job and escalate service outages, signal quality problems, noise, and plant issues to a senior technician or supervisor.

- Perform signal level, BER, OTDR, power meter, and related tests to verify service quality and document results.

- Install and dress aerial and UG drops (temporary or permanent) and inside wiring in attics, crawl spaces, basements, utility rooms, and along exterior walls in a neat, code-compliant manner.

- Read and interpret construction drawings, cabling schedules, riser diagrams, and specifications to determine cable routing and termination requirements.

- Bond, ground, and weatherproof installations in accordance with NEC, NESC, company standards, and local codes.

- Program, activate, and provision customer equipment; confirm TV, phone, and internet services are working before closing the job.

- Coordinate with dispatch, warehouse, network operations, and other field teams to complete assigned installation routes and escalate plant or repair issues.

- Complete work orders, as-built documentation, test reports, and closeout documentation.

- Interact professionally with building owners, general contractors, customers, and other stakeholders on active job sites.

- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues affecting coaxial, copper, ADSL, and fiber services at the customer premises and drop.

- Maintain assigned vehicle, tools, testers, and material inventory in safe, stocked, and ready-to-work condition.

- Perform other duties as needed to support projects, operations, and the department.

Qualifications

Qualifications

- High school diploma or GED required; technical training in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field preferred.

- No prior telecom experience installing, terminating, or testing network cabling systems preferred; equivalent combination of training and experience considered.

Skills and Abilities

- Basic knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, coaxial, copper, ADSL/DSL, and fiber optic installation techniques, connectors, tools, and materials.

- Ability to safely work aloft on ladders and telecommunication poles.

- Familiarity with NEC, NESC, OSHA, company safety rules, and applicable local codes for customer-premises work.

- Strong customer service and communication skills for work inside occupied homes and businesses.

- Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

- Ability to use basic signal meters, power meters, and tone generators after training. OTDR and other advanced test equipment are not required for this role.

- Ability to follow test procedures, confirm TV, phone, and internet service after installation, and escalate faults that cannot be cleared through standard installation steps. Valid drivers license and insurable driving record. OSHA 10 and relevant telecom or fiber certifications preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

May work inside or outside. Possible exposure to hot and cold temperatures, in all-weather elements such as rain, heat, cold and snow. This position also requires work at extreme heights, in areas that are under construction, or in restricted areas such as a switchgear room, manhole, utility tunnel, crawl space, or attic, in confined spaces, and on slippery or uneven surfaces; works on ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, in ditches and excavations; works in and around single and multi-story buildings with all exposures typical of a heavy construction site, including portable sanitary facilities.

- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull and reach overhead.

- Lift 50 pounds, routinely. Constantly move about on the feet.

- Climb ladders of all types.

- Complete full day assignments involving overhead work.

- Must be able to make transition from employee parking area or street into construction work areas and to access all levels of the building, even if the only means of access is by O.S.H.A. approved site construction ladder or stairs still under construction, but acceptable for use.

- May require the ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time.

- Possess good vision, normal or corrected. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision to discern color coded wires, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

- Possess good hearing, normal or corrected.

- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) at all times, or safety mask as necessary.

- Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required and night shifts, as needed. With some nights and weekends.

- Must be able to work in the presence of customers and their representatives with little or no interference or disruption to the customer while maintaining a professional and courteous image.
