About the role
Join UBC Student Housing and Community Services as an Electrician, maintaining and troubleshooting electrical, control, BMS, automation, and life-safety systems across the Vancouver campus. Reporting to the Head and/or Sub-Head Electrician, you will keep the university's residential communities running safely through preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, and emergency response.
Responsibilities
- Preventive and breakdown maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and installation as an Industrial Controls Electrician
- Work from oral and written instructions, drawings, specifications, and work orders, in compliance with applicable codes and regulations
- Respond to trouble calls and emergencies during and outside normal working hours
- Troubleshoot and maintain industrial electrical drive systems, automation systems, robotic systems, electronic controls, and microprocessor-based (PLC) systems
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot communication LAN and serial data systems, emergency standby systems, and heating, ventilation, and climate control systems
- Perform fire life-safety testing and maintenance; calibrate instrumentation with specialized test equipment
- Complete time cards, work orders, preventive maintenance reports, and test-inspection reports; create as-built documentation
- May train, mentor, or check the work of apprentices and labourers
Qualifications
- Trade certification to journeyperson level as a Red Seal Electrician or Industrial Electrician
- Valid BC driver's licence; normal colour vision
- Minimum five years of related experience
- Working knowledge of industrial safety regulations, building codes, and trade maintenance practices
- Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, sketches, and maintenance manuals; strong computer skills
- Able to work independently, respond to emergency calls outside normal hours, and work various shifts including days, evenings, and weekends
- Asset: Registered Fire Protection Technician (RFPT) certification through ASTTBC, or technician certification through the Canadian Fire Alarm Association
Pay & benefits
- Annual salary approximately $89,844–$96,336
- Overtime paid at double time where applicable
- University pension: UBC contributes 9.4% of gross pensionable earnings
- Vacation starting at 3 weeks, growing to 6 weeks, plus 3 additional days off between Christmas and New Year
