Job Title: Project Manager Utility-Scale Solar Construction Job Description This role leads the full lifecycle delivery of utility-scale solar projects, from permitting through construction, commissioning, and turnover to operations and maintenance. The Project Manager coordinates internal teams, contractors, vendors, and external stakeholders to ensure projects meet scope, schedule, and budget targets while maintaining high quality and safety standards. The position is based in the Arlington, Virginia headquarters and focuses on large renewable energy projects across the United States, with an emphasis on solar. Responsibilities
- Prepare, negotiate, and execute contractor agreements that ensure compliance with project specifications, budgets, and schedules.
- Manage project cost accounting and overall project budgets to limit financial risk and maintain profitability.
- Lead drawing takeoffs, cost estimating, and subcontractor agreements to support accurate project planning and execution.
- Coordinate all aspects of project work, including equipment, materials, subcontractors, and vendors, to achieve successful project implementation.
- Work closely with internal and external project stakeholders, including contractors, inspectors, consultants, local counties, and other agencies, to develop and maintain detailed project schedules.
- Maintain a professional level of communication with subcontractors, equipment and material vendors, owners, inspectors, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Oversee projects from permitting phase through construction, closeout, and turnover to the operations and maintenance team.
- Contribute to and manage efforts to resolve drawing conflicts and coordinate with project consultants, site managers, and other technical stakeholders to troubleshoot and solve problems.
- Manage project closeout activities, including commissioning, training, warranties, and preparation of operations and maintenance manuals for turnover to the O&M department.
- Create, update, and manage critical path project schedules using scheduling software to ensure on-time delivery.
- Coordinate project scheduling, material procurement, inspections, and contractor mobilizations in collaboration with construction superintendents and site managers.
- Manage construction activities, contracts, and finances to deliver projects on time and within budget while maintaining quality standards.
- Oversee project RFIs and submittals, ensuring timely responses and organized documentation of project updates.
- Conduct annual performance reviews of direct reports and provide ongoing coaching and development as needed.
- Manage and develop direct reports when required, fostering a collaborative and high-performing project team.
- Ensure change orders, RFIs, and budget adjustments are properly documented, tracked, and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
- Apply a strong technical understanding of drawings and specifications to support field teams and add value in troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines, ensuring each project progresses according to plan.
- Produce accurate, error-free work under deadlines and maintain organized project documentation.
- Collaborate as a team player while demonstrating strong initiative and the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Essential Skills
- Experience with solar construction and/or working on large utility-scale projects.
- Experience in construction management, preferably with utility-scale renewable energy projects in Virginia or the East Coast; general contractor experience will be considered.
- At least 4+ years of proven expertise in project management, preferably in utility-scale renewables in Virginia or the East Coast; candidates with general contractor experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated project and/or case management skills, including the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
- High-level knowledge of the solar renewable energy construction process, including permitting, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Intermediate to expert proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for project documentation, reporting, and analysis.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or similar scheduling software to create and manage critical path project schedules.
- Experience managing project budgets, RFIs, and change orders, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools to support these tasks.
- Proficiency in contractor outreach and project estimation, including bid evaluation and subcontractor selection.
- Ability to manage project RFIs and submittals and deliver organized, timely project updates.
- Strong technical understanding of construction drawings and specifications, with the ability to support troubleshooting and problem-solving with contractors and superintendents.
- Proven ability to produce error-free work under deadline and maintain high levels of accuracy and organization.
- Independent thinker who can thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and make sound decisions with limited supervision.
- Team player with strong initiative who is intrinsically motivated and able to work autonomously while contributing to a collaborative project team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in utility construction, project management, construction management, or project engineering, particularly within solar or broader renewable energy.
- Experience working on utility-scale solar projects, including coordination with contractors, inspectors, consultants, and local agencies.
- Experience managing construction activities, contracts, and finances to deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Familiarity with change order processes and documentation in a construction environment.
- Ability to coordinate project scheduling, material procurement, inspections, and contractor mobilizations with construction superintendents and site managers.
- Experience managing and developing direct reports, including conducting performance reviews and providing mentorship.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to maintain professional relationships with subcontractors, vendors, owners, inspectors, and other stakeholders.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, growth-oriented renewable energy environment with multiple concurrent projects.
Work Environment This position is based in the Arlington, Virginia headquarters office as part of a dedicated project management team focused on utility-scale solar projects. The role involves regular collaboration with internal departments, construction superintendents, site managers, contractors, consultants, inspectors, local counties, and other agencies. Work is performed in a professional office environment using tools such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, and other standard project management and communication software. The Project Manager supports field activities and construction sites through coordination, planning, and oversight, and may periodically visit project sites as needed. The work environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with multiple large-scale renewable energy projects progressing simultaneously, offering the opportunity to contribute to impactful solar and broader renewable energy initiatives.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Arlington, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $120000.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
