About this role
The Department of Neurology is seeking a Sr. Research Nurse . The Sr. Research Nurse will support the clinical and research activities of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center, including NIH, non-profit, and commercially sponsored clinical trials. This role is hybrid in that the candidate will also play a role in the clinical care of our patient population.
The Sr. Research Nurse will assist the principal investigators in the implementation of novel high-profile clinical trials for new methods to treat people with Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders. The successful applicant will be passionate about patient well-being, and improving the long-term trajectory for those patients through research and clinical care. The clinical role includes support of operations in the botulinum toxin injection clinic. While the nurse will work with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, research nurses, and research coordinators, applicants must be able to work and make decisions independently, and have good time management skills in order to work on several projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
Specific Duties and Responsiblities
Research Duties
- Screen potential participants for participation in trials and recruitment for studies through patient registries and relevant clinics
- Ensure the informed consent process for studies, and coordinate participant enrollment and follow-up visits related to each respective study.
- The research nurse will also help with the collection of study data and biospecimens, entering data into study database, as well as documenting and reporting adverse events.
- Guide the activities of research coordinators or research assistants also working on those research projects on which this Sr. Research Nurse is working.
- Supervision of computer data entry, compilation and timely submission of summary reports, accurate record keeping of all study participant data, enrollment of study participants, appointments of study participants, monitoring of clinic visits and hospitalizations of study participants, chart review, home visits, specimen collection/processing, interviews and study subject follow ups.
- Assure Coordinator compliance with University and Division daily work policies and procedures.
- Reinforcing and promoting research staff compliance with Johns Hopkins human subjects research and good clinical practice policies.
- Coordination of study documentation (printing/filing/ copying/scanning for transmission of sponsors or collaborators).
- Reporting protocol deviations and adverse events in a timely manner.
- Will assist with the management of protocol related health problems, and maintain communication with members of the research team in a confidential manner and in accordance with good clinical practice.
- Interact with Study sponsors to initiate clinical studies, including IRB submission/management, budget development with CRSS (or internal), interface with ORA regarding contracts.
- External contact with members of the research study sponsoring agency, independent research monitors and ancillary center staff.
- Daily decision making regarding organizational aspects and logistics of study protocols.
- Hire and train new research coordinators that may join division on research administration, ethics, logistics and be responsible for their success.
- Maintain research related documents and correspondence in a confidential manner, including informed consent forms and research data.
- Resolve queries and reviewing monitoring reports to identify and correct errors. Maintaining study inventory according to regulatory standards.
- Review with PIs research accounts status.
- Work with Compliance committees and Institutional Review Boards.
- Interact with research subjects by email, phone, and in-person in a professional manner.
- Meet with the research team on a regular basis, and participating in troubleshooting and resolving issues for research studies.
Clinical Duties
- Assist with therapy plan entry, dosing confirmation, pharmacy interactions, and drug preparation in the botulinum toxin injection clinic.
- Work with Medical Office Coordinators to relay provider input regarding medical decision making for patient inquiries for one provider.
- Communicates, consults and collaborates with other units/departments to assist in the comprehensive care of patients.
- Provides crisis intervention as needed, and triages complex cases; practices case management to ensure longitudinal care for patients, and coordinates scheduling of complicated patient treatment courses.
- Participates in ensuring a smooth operational clinic flow. Identifies barriers to service and creates solutions to ensure timely, safe, patient-centered care.
- Obtain training in Parkinson’s disease and other related conditions through division-sponsored trips and/or online educational series through the Parkinson’s Foundation or other resources.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline.
- Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland.
- 2 years' experience in the specialty or a related area.

Starting Salary Range: $76,980 - $134,995 Annually ($105,985 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
