Position Overview
CLFC Healthcare and Communications is building its Maryland roster of certified American Sign Language interpreters for assignments with government agencies across the state, delivered in person and by video.
The work is community and government interpreting: public meetings and testimony, resident appointments at agency offices, employee meetings and trainings, and formal proceedings such as administrative hearings and investigatory interviews. Much of it is delivered by video, and the rest is on-site at agency locations in Maryland. Long, technical or high-stakes assignments are worked in teams of two.
This suits an established interpreter in Maryland or the Washington area who wants well-paid government work close to home and the freedom to choose assignments. You may take on-site assignments, video assignments or both. It is per-assignment contract work, not a salaried position.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret between spoken English and American Sign Language in public meetings, agency appointments, employee meetings, trainings and formal proceedings.
- Match the consumer's preferred mode, including signed English and transliteration, and voice signed communication into spoken English accurately and in register.
- Deliver video remote and virtual meeting assignments with stable video and audio, and reconnect quickly if a session drops.
- Work in a team of two on long, technical or high-stakes assignments.
- Stay neutral and accurate in every setting, keep everything learned on an assignment confidential, and handle preparation materials securely.
- Confirm acceptance promptly, tell CLFC as early as possible if you can no longer cover a confirmed assignment, and submit your assignment record and invoice promptly.
Required Qualifications
- Current national certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI and CT, or CSC).
- Compliance with Maryland's sign language interpreter licensing requirement when it takes effect on January 1, 2028. CLFC supports you through the application.
- Professional interpreting experience in community or government settings, working in both directions and holding register in formal settings.
- For video assignments: reliable high-speed internet, a camera and lighting that show your signing clearly, and a private workspace.
- If you take on-site assignments: reliable transportation to assignment locations in your part of Maryland.
- Adherence to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
- Legal interpreting qualification or documented experience in formal proceedings. Holders of the RID Specialist Certificate: Legal are especially welcome.
- Experience interpreting for government agencies, public meetings or public testimony.
- Experience with DeafBlind consumers, oral transliteration, or teaming with a Certified Deaf Interpreter.
- Availability for same-day, evening or short-notice requests.

- Confirmed assignments cancelled inside 24 hours of the start time are paid.
- Team assignments are staffed and paid as two interpreters, not split between two people. Mileage, tolls and parking for on-site assignments are reimbursed.
- Assignments are offered and confirmed through CLFC's BRIDGE App, with the date, time, location or meeting link, expected length and type of assignment in advance.
- A named Program Manager from CLFC's Program Management Office is your single point of contact for scheduling, coordination and payment, so your time goes to interpreting.
