About this role

We are seeking an energetic, highly motivated, team-oriented Teardown Technician to support failure analysis and quality investigations for Data Center Manufacturing. The Teardown Technician systematically disassemble failed, returned, or suspect electro-mechanical components, subassemblies, and finished units to identify defect modes, preserve evidence, and generate clear findings that enable root cause and corrective action. Work is performed in a high-speed manufacturing environment in close partnership with Quality Engineering, Quality Technicians, Production, and cross-functional engineering teams. Technicians must flag nonconformances discovered during teardown, maintain strict part and serial-number traceability, escalate concerns to the appropriate party, and always promote a culture of quality and safety. The purpose of the Teardown Technician is to turn product failures into actionable quality data, minimize recurrence of defects sent to downstream departments or the field, and assist multiple teams in maintaining and improving overall product quality, yielding higher reliability and efficiency for Tesla.

Perform controlled teardowns of failed, suspect, or returned parts, subassemblies, and finished units per Quality Instructions and engineering direction  Document teardown steps, observations, photos, measurements, and defect modes with full part/serial traceability for engineering and quality records  Identify and segregate nonconforming components; support containment, sort, and clean-point activities driven by teardown findings  Support Quality Engineers and Quality Technicians with RCCA evidence collection, sample preparation, and failure-mode characterization  Use basic and precision measurement tools (calipers, gauges, torque tools, multimeters, and related inspection equipment) to verify dimensions, torque, continuity, and workmanship during teardown  Drive creation and maintenance of Teardown / Quality Instruction documents and standard work for repeatable investigation methods  Serve as on-shift subject matter support for teardown process, product construction, and known failure modes in assigned product areas

Must have command of the English language, both written and verbal  Experience with quality systems, failure analysis, rework, or hands-on assembly/disassembly in a high-volume manufacturing environment preferred  Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills; ability to follow detailed teardown sequences without damaging evidence or adjacent components  Knowledge of basic measurement and inspection tools (calipers, gauges, torque wrenches, multimeters); experience with electro-mechanical components, welding, powder coat, harness, or final assembly desirable  Ability to read and interpret manufacturing drawings, BOMs, work instructions, and quality standards; GD&T familiarity a plus  Ability to effectively communicate findings, defect modes, and risks to technicians, engineers, and leadership with clear photos and written notes  Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, manage multiple teardown queues, and meet investigation turnaround expectations
