Reports to: Chief Underwriting Officer
You will lead technical underwriting and insurance solution development across RI Direct and Partnership opportunities. Your responsibilities will include risk assessment, coverage design, insurance and reinsurance structuring, and coordination of contractual implementation with Legal. You will also manage the Actuarial Manager’s priorities and delivery while preserving their professional judgment over actuarial conclusions.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Lead underwriting assessments for new opportunities, identifying material risks and evaluating acceptability within approved appetite and delegated authority.
- Develop and evaluate coverage, exclusions, limits and risk allocation to create technically sound insurance solutions.
- Design insurance and reinsurance structures and assess the technical suitability of proposed insurers, reinsurers and other counterparties.
- Translate product requirements from Partnership into practical underwriting terms and insurance arrangements.
- Work with the Actuarial Manager to interpret pricing models, assumptions and sensitivity analysis, incorporating actuarial findings into underwriting decisions.
- Review policy and reinsurance wording and coordinate contractual implementation with Legal to ensure the intended coverage and risk allocation are reflected in the documentation.
- Participate in technical discussions with insurers, reinsurers, brokers and partners to resolve coverage, wording and structuring requirements.
- Establish and maintain underwriting assessment templates, technical approval records, referral criteria and underwriting guidelines.
- Monitor portfolio performance, including pricing adequacy, claims experience, exposures and emerging risks, and recommend appropriate underwriting actions.
- Report technical turnaround, rework, capacity constraints and material exceptions to the CUO, using case reviews and portfolio experience to improve underwriting practices.
Requirements
WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU:
- At least five years of relevant general insurance or reinsurance technical underwriting experience, including assessment of non-standard risks or insurance arrangements.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate coverage, exclusions, limits, risk allocation and insurance and reinsurance structures.
- Ability to interpret pricing models, assumptions and sensitivity analysis and incorporate actuarial findings into underwriting decisions.
- Experience reviewing policy and reinsurance wording and working with Legal on contractual implementation.
- Experience managing technical priorities and supervising staff or leading technical projects.
- Strong analytical judgment, clear written documentation and the ability to explain technical recommendations to commercial stakeholders.
- Sound understanding of delegated authority, referrals and underwriting governance.
- Practical, commercially informed decision-making, with the ability to test assumptions, document rationale and escalate material exceptions promptly.
- Strong collaboration and delivery leadership, including the ability to prioritise competing demands and communicate dependencies early.
- Respect for professional actuarial judgment, combined with accountability for the technical stream’s delivery and continuous improvement.
NICE TO HAVE
- Recognized insurance or actuarial qualifications, such as ACII, AMII or equivalent.
- Experience in affinity, embedded insurance, digital platforms or innovative insurance products.
- Exposure to cross-border arrangements, fronting structures and regional insurance and reinsurance markets.
- Experience establishing underwriting guidelines, technical controls and portfolio monitoring processes.
- Familiarity with product implementation, claims processes and data requirements for experience analysis.
