Purpose/Summary:
- Review and quality assure cargo survey reports to ensure that findings are complete, accurate and adequately supported by evidence.
- Ensure survey findings provide relevant information to support claims assessment, liability determination, recovery and loss-prevention activities.
- Identify gaps in survey investigations and engage with surveyors to obtain necessary clarification, documentation or additional evidence.
- Support effective survey management by ensuring survey activities are proportionate, cost-effective and focused on the information required to protect Maersk’s interests.
- Identify recovery opportunities and recurring cargo damage trends from survey findings and provide actionable recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review cargo survey reports received from surveyors globally and ensure timely completion of reviews in accordance with agreed service levels.
- Critically assess survey findings, photographs and supporting documentation for completeness, consistency and quality.
- Assess whether survey reports adequately establish the nature, extent and probable cause of cargo damage.
- Identify missing information, evidence, documentation or inconsistencies and follow up with surveyors for clarification or supplementary reporting.
- Determine whether further investigation, testing, documentation, expert input or additional survey activity should be recommended.
- Review survey conclusions and ensure they are appropriately supported by the factual evidence available.
- Identify potential liability, contributory factors and recovery opportunities arising from survey findings and highlight these to the relevant claims teams.
- Ensure appropriate evidence is obtained and preserved to support claims, defence and recovery actions.
- Review survey recommendations relating to mitigation, repair, salvage, reconditioning or disposal of damaged cargo and highlight issues requiring further assessment.
- Assess whether survey activities undertaken or proposed are reasonable and proportionate to the nature and value of the matter.
- Challenge unnecessary or disproportionate survey activities and costs where appropriate.
- Provide clear observations and recommendations to claims handlers and other relevant stakeholders based on survey findings.
- Liaise effectively with surveyors and survey companies to clarify findings, obtain additional information and improve report quality.
- Identify recurring quality or performance issues with surveyors and escalate these to the Manager – Cargo Survey Management.
- Capture relevant survey information and contribute to analysis of recurring cargo damage causes, commodities, locations and operational trends.
- Provide feedback and insights to support loss-prevention initiatives and reduction of recurring cargo damage.
- Contribute to development and continuous improvement of survey standards, review guidelines, templates and processes.
- Maintain accurate and complete survey documentation and records.
Required Qualification:
- Bachelor's degree from recognized university, preferably in Maritime Studies, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Logistics, Insurance, Law or another relevant discipline.
Position Specifications:
- Minimum three to five years’ experience in cargo surveying, marine/cargo claims, shipping operations, marine insurance, container operations or a similar maritime role.
- Knowledge of logistics, marine transportation, and International Maritime Law / Conventions.
- Experience from a cargo survey company, P&I correspondent, marine insurer, shipping company or similar organization will be preferred.
- Good understanding of containerized cargo transportation, commodities, and common cargo damage mechanisms.
- Ability to critically analyse survey reports, photographs, reefer data logs, technical findings and supporting documentation.
- Good understanding of causation, evidence, liability and recovery considerations in cargo claims.
- Strong investigative mindset with the ability to identify gaps, inconsistencies and unsupported conclusions.
- Ability to challenge survey findings constructively and seek appropriate clarification or additional evidence.
- Good commercial judgement and ability to consider proportionality between claim exposure, survey requirements and associated costs.
- Excellent communication skills (English proficiency – verbal & written) and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders from different backgrounds, functions and nationalities.
- Well organized and capable of maintaining an overview across a high volume of survey reports and simultaneous activities.
- Strong sense of urgency, ownership and result orientation with a strong commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
- Cultural adaptability and ability to engage effectively in various cultural environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and claims management systems.
