Position Summary
The Part-Time Building & Grounds Technician supports the maintenance, appearance, safety, and daily operation of Lane College buildings, grounds, and campus facilities. This position performs a variety of general maintenance, groundskeeping, custodial support, minor repair, and preventative maintenance duties to help ensure that the campus remains safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The technician works collaboratively with members of the Facilities team and other College departments and may assist with campus events, facility setups, emergency maintenance needs, and special projects as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Building Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections of College buildings, facilities, and assigned areas to identify maintenance or safety concerns.
- Perform minor repairs involving doors, locks, hardware, furniture, walls, ceilings, flooring, fixtures, and other building components.
- Assist with minor plumbing repairs, including clogged drains, leaking faucets, running toilets, and replacement of basic fixtures when qualified and authorized.
- Assist with basic electrical maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, fixtures, and other non-licensed electrical components.
- Perform basic painting, patching, caulking, and general facility repairs.
- Assist with preventative maintenance activities according to established schedules.
- Report major maintenance, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, structural, or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist skilled tradespersons or outside contractors when necessary.
Grounds Maintenance
- Maintain campus grounds, walkways, entrances, parking areas, landscaping, and other exterior spaces.
- Perform mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, raking, weeding, and other routine landscaping duties.
- Assist with planting, pruning, mulching, and maintenance of flowers, shrubs, trees, and landscaped areas.
- Remove trash, leaves, branches, debris, and other materials from campus grounds.
- Assist with maintaining sidewalks, curbs, drainage areas, and exterior campus spaces.
- Support seasonal grounds maintenance activities.
Campus and Event Support
- Assist with moving furniture, equipment, supplies, and other materials throughout campus.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs, staging, equipment, and other materials for College meetings, programs, ceremonies, athletic events, and special events.
- Assist with preparation of facilities for campus events and activities.
- Respond to work orders and service requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Assist with room arrangements, office relocations, and other facility-related projects.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all College safety policies, procedures, and applicable workplace safety requirements.
- Properly operate and maintain tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles assigned to the position.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment when performing assigned duties.
- Properly store tools, chemicals, equipment, and materials.
- Immediately report hazardous conditions, accidents, injuries, property damage, or safety concerns to the supervisor.
- Place appropriate warning signs or barriers around unsafe areas until conditions can be corrected.
- Maintain assigned work areas, maintenance spaces, and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide responsive and courteous service to students, faculty, staff, visitors, and other members of the campus community.
- Maintain College property, equipment, and resources responsibly.
- Complete assigned work orders and provide status updates as required.
- Assist with emergency preparation and response activities as directed.
- May be required to work during inclement weather, campus emergencies, or special events.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, groundskeeping, construction, landscaping, custodial services, or a related field preferred.
- Basic knowledge of general building maintenance and repair practices.
- Ability to safely operate common hand tools, power tools, landscaping equipment, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to safety and detail.
- Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and dependability.
- Ability to interact professionally with students, employees, visitors, contractors, and members of the public.
- Valid driver's license may be required based on assigned responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, construction, or a related field.
- Experience working in a college, university, school, commercial facility, or similar institutional environment.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting, landscaping, HVAC, or electrical maintenance.
- Experience using work-order or facilities-management systems.
- Relevant maintenance, equipment-operation, or safety certifications are desirable.

Physical Requirements
The physical demands of this position may include:
- Frequently standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing, pushing, and pulling.
- Regularly lifting and carrying tools, supplies, equipment, furniture, and materials.
- Ability to lift and/or move approximately 50 pounds , with assistance or appropriate equipment for heavier items.
- Ability to safely use ladders and maintenance equipment as required.
- Ability to perform work indoors and outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to perform duties in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to perform repetitive physical activities associated with maintenance and groundskeeping work.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the Lane College campus. The employee may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, dust, noise, dirt, cleaning products, landscaping materials, mechanical equipment, and other conditions commonly associated with building and grounds maintenance.
The position may require occasional early morning, evening, weekend, holiday, special-event, or emergency work depending upon the operational needs of the College.
Schedule
This is a part-time position . Work hours will be established based upon the operational needs of the Buildings & Grounds/Facilities Department and Lane College. The employee must not exceed authorized work hours without prior supervisory approval.
