FLEET ENGINEER (Fleet Technical Services)

Job Description

This position will be filled at an exempt level 4E - 5E. This position will report to the Fleet Engineering Supervisor at Georgia Power Company. This position will be responsible for performing engineering for the purchase and support of fleet vehicles and equipment. This support includes detailed specifications, problem solving, meeting with vendors, meeting with customers, and field engineering meetings (with both customers and vendors). Duties include specification writing, bid analysis, failure analysis, and inspection of equipment, solving vehicle and equipment problems.

Summary of Position Duties and Responsibilities

This position will provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) knowledge in numerous area of engineering. These areas will include:

- Develop specifications, drawings, calculations, and technical bulletins (sound engineering principals and accuracy).
- Vehicle and equipment design (hydraulic, electrical, and structural).
- Failure Analysis (component investigation, root cause analysis, and impact to the fleet).
- Safety oversight of vehicles and equipment in Georgia Power’s Fleet.
- Accident Investigation (discovery, analysis, documentation, and follow-up).

Additional expectations of the SME will be;

- Knowledgeable of federal and state transportation regulations.
- Represent Georgia Power Company on sub committees as required.
- Support projects with safety enhancements, productivity improvements, and equipment reliability. Also lead the modification committee.

The position will provide support for the planning, engineering, specification/design, delivery, modification, and maintenance of the vehicles and mounted equipment used by Distribution, Transmission, and other business units supported by Fleet. The position is also responsible for the long term strategy of quality and reliability for the vehicles and equipment.

The Fleet Engineer will be expected to participate and lead Fleet Engineering in statewide initiatives, projects, and committees, as well as to be an active participant with various Transmission and Distribution Committees as needed.

Job Experience and Education

Education

- Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology is required; however, a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology is preferred.
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is a plus.
- Professional Engineer (PE) Certification is a plus.

Experience

- Preference will be given to candidates with fleet automotive engineering experience.
- Previous experience in specification writing, mechanical design, and presenting large and complex projects is preferred.
- Knowledge of transmission and distribution construction would be extremely useful along with proven record of effectively supporting customers.
- Other valuable experience includes serving on committees at the statewide level, knowledge of ANSI and OSHA regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

- Engineering analysis skills, understanding of mechanical design and managing multiple projects will be required.
- The position requires an in-depth knowledge of the mechanical workings of vehicles and equipment as well as compliance requirements, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of ANSI and OSHA regulations will be a plus.
- Ability to act as a technical specialist is required.
- Broad understanding of operations, policies, and procedures.
- Strong leadership, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
- Strong working knowledge of CAD and computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Products.
- Ability to operate in a matrix environment.

Other Requirements

- This job may require attendance at out-of-town meetings with minimal overnight travel. The fleet engineer may need to support after-hours power restoration efforts, on and off system storms and will be required to support fleet in storm restoration efforts

This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:

- Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).
- Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
- Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record

Education
