1st shift: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday

Full-Time Summer 2027 Internship

Competitive Weekly Pay Period

Analytical Services is responsible for material testing and insuring conformance to applicable material specifications and periodically reviewing material specifications for accuracy. The intern candidate would work in the Analytical lab, report to the Assistant Manager of Analytical Services, and be located at S&C Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Follow procedures and practices to perform routine analysis on various materials including coatings, plastics and metals that are used in equipment production.
- Work closely with team members to support the improvement of materials and processes for new/existing products.
- Analyze samples from wastewater treatment processes.
- Troubleshoot chemical related processes employed throughout the company and evaluate potential changes or improvements to the processes.
- Test and document for improved process workflow and the creation of standardized work.
- Occasionally write clear and concise technical reports describing the work with sufficient detail so it can be reproduced.
- Analyze, select or recommend materials for new or existing products or products returned from the field.
- Analyze metal fabrication problems pertaining to materials, tooling or processes.
- Prepare samples for the optical or scanning electron microscopes and then complete the examination.
- Use Rockwell, Brinell, and Knoop Hardness testing equipment.
- Work with hourly personnel and supervision at all levels, product engineers, sales, field service and Global Supply Specialist including Suppliers to inform, educate and resolve product issues.
- Provide assistance, guidance and problem solving results to other departments and regional centers.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Work on multiple projects simultaneously and able to work well with others in an LPS team environment.
- Create technical reports and method development procedures or standard work to be reviewed by peers or department leadership.

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

- In-progress degree program from an accredited university/college program with a concentration in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or other related discipline and returning to school full-time at the end of the internship.
- Knowledge of Metallurgy, Chemistry, and/or associated processes.
- Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and use of common instrumentation is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and other PC skills.
- Have excellent verbal and written communications skills.

- Standing:    Occasional standing for work
- Lifting:          Occasional lifting of controls and test equipment, less than 50 pounds
- Walking:       Occasional walking throughout the facility
- Carrying:      Occasional carrying of light objects
- Pushing:        Infrequent pushing of objects, possibly related to rearrangement work
- Pulling:         Infrequent pulling of objects, possibly related to rearrangement work
- Bending:       Occasional bending during access to equipment
- Reaching:      Infrequent reaching
- Handling:  Frequent handling of sample parts use of various hand or power tools.  Safe handling of a variety of chemicals and compounds.
- Environment: Full service Analytical Laboratory capable of analyzing plastics, rubbers, metals, alloys, paints, coatings, aqueous solutions, nonmetallic solids and organic liquids along with a standard office/desktop workspace.
