# General Description:
This position provides day-to-day athletic training services for assigned school’s sports teams. The incumbent assesses, treats and develops rehabilitation and reconditioning strategies for athletes.

Job Description:

Essential Job Functions :

- Designs and implements prevention and education programs
- Attends home and away games as agreed upon by the respective head coaches and/or athletic directors
- Performs the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, assessment, treatment, (including first aid) and reconditioning as set forth by the NATA Board of certification
- Demonstrates proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment.
- Carries out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event physician.
- Covers assigned pre-season physicals, sports games or matches, and related events under the supervision of the program manager.
- Assist with or transfer athletes of various weight/heights.
- Push carts with athletic equipment on them and carry training kit and coolers for long distances.
- Communicate to give adequate directions and instructions to athletes
- Travel to various sporting events

Work Direction/Supervision:

Works under supervision of the Director of Student Activities and school principal.

A high level of independent decision-making is required.

Physical Demands :

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; to see and read printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels. Frequent walking, standing, lifting greater than 50 pounds. Physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk long distances and reach overhead. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Occasional moving of students weighing greater than 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary.

Work Environment :

Potential for exposure to; adverse weather conditions, exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases, possible interactions with disruptive and/or unruly individuals. Work may involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and loud noise. Involves minimum exposure to physical risk while moving athletes. The employee regularly works with medical substances, supplies, and equipment.

Qualifications:

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the athletes’ status and interpret the appropriate information.  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrates professionalism and fosters a positive environment.

Additional Job Requirements:

Required:

Bachelor's Degree in a specialized curriculum accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education

- License in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Athletic Trainer or eligible
- National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Certification (BOC)
- Current CPR certification

Preferred:

- Masters Degree  in a specialized curriculum accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education
- Two years previous athletic training experience

- State Police Criminal History Investigation
- Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
- Tuberculosis Screening/Test

Compensation
$35.76 per hour
