About this role

Work Location: This position may be based in either our Grand Rapids, Michigan, or Scottsdale, Arizona office.

Position Summary

The Civil Engineer, EIT is responsible for providing a wide range of engineering, drafting, and support functions from concept design through construction administration while working under the direction of licensed Professional Engineers and project managers.

This position provides an opportunity to strengthen technical skills, develop professional engineering judgment, and gain experience toward Professional Engineer licensure.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Engineering Design & Technical Responsibilities

- Prepare engineering drawings, plans, specifications, and technical construction documents for land development and civil engineering projects.

- Assist with the design and drafting of site development improvements, including site grading, mass grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, roadway design, and related project infrastructure.

- Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to prepare engineering plans, layouts, profiles, models, and supporting documentation.

- Perform engineering calculations and prepare supporting technical documentation and reports under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer.

Project Coordination & Construction Support

- Research and evaluate survey information, zoning requirements, utility records, municipal standards, and applicable codes.

- Coordinate project information with internal design teams, consultants, municipalities, utilities, and permitting agencies.

- Participate in project meetings with clients, contractors, consultants, municipalities, and internal staff.

- Assist during construction by supporting responses to Requests for Information (RFIs), reviewing shop drawings and submittals, and performing occasional site observations.

Quality, Documentation & Professional Development

- Review engineering plans and project documents for accuracy and completeness prior to senior or PE review, and incorporate review comments and revisions into engineering plans and documents.

- Maintain organized project files and documentation throughout the project lifecycle while supporting multiple projects and meeting established schedules, budgets, and quality expectations.

- Continue developing technical knowledge and professional engineering judgment in preparation for PE licensure.

- Other duties and responsibilities reasonably related to the role, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.

- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.

- Two (2) or more years of civil engineering experience.

- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and other engineering design-aided programs.

- Proficiency with Microsoft programs and Bluebeam; valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

- Civil engineering experience in site development, land development, or municipal infrastructure.

- Experience working with local, state, and federal permitting requirements and municipal standards.

- Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary design teams, consultants, utilities, municipalities, or permitting agencies.

- Experience supporting projects through construction administration or site observation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Working knowledge of civil engineering design principles, including grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility, and roadway design.

- Ability to perform engineering calculations and apply applicable design standards with appropriate guidance.

- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents; strong analytical, problem-solving, written and verbal communication, organizational, and teamwork skills; ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment and work independently within assigned responsibilities.

Physical Requirements

- Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.

- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.

- Ability to travel to project sites, which may require walking over uneven terrain and exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment with periodic visits to active project sites. Site visits may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, construction activities, and uneven terrain. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided when required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Travel

Occasional local and regional travel to project sites, client meetings, and municipal agencies.
