About Analog Devices
Analog Devices (NASDAQ: ADI) designs and manufactures semiconductor products and solutions that bridge the physical and digital worlds through technologies that sense, measure, connect, and interpret. Analog Devices' MEMS Technology Group develops advanced inertial sensing solutions for industrial, healthcare, automotive, aerospace, defense, robotics, and autonomous applications.
Position Overview
Analog Devices is seeking a versatile Staff Product Applications Engineer to help customers evaluate, integrate, and optimize leading-edge inertial sensing and navigation technologies. The engineer will combine deep applications expertise with system-level knowledge of inertial navigation, GNSS, state estimation, and sensor fusion. The role supports strategic and broad-market opportunities, serves as a senior technical resource for customers and field teams, and converts customer and market needs into product, platform, tool, and documentation requirements.
The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between component-level sensor performance and complete navigation-system behavior. The engineer will work directly with customers, field applications, product, design, test, software, systems, and marketing teams to solve difficult technical problems and accelerate successful design-in of ADI inertial MEMS products.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical expert for inertial sensing and navigation applications, guiding customers through product discovery, evaluation, integration, troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Develop and maintain product data sheets, application notes, user guides, implementation guidance, reference designs, evaluation platforms, software tools, and other customer-facing technical collateral.
- Lead laboratory analysis and system-level characterization of IMUs, gyroscopes, accelerometers, and associated navigation solutions using bench equipment and application-representative test environments.
- Support customer architectures that combine inertial sensors with GNSS and other aiding sensors for attitude, position, velocity, heading, and timing estimation.
- Develop or adapt models, algorithms, simulations, and analysis tools that demonstrate the performance and robustness of inertial sensing, state estimation, and multi-sensor fusion solutions.
- Work with cross-functional teams to identify, reproduce, simulate, and resolve functional, parametric, hardware, software, and system-integration issues arising during customer evaluation and design-in.
- Act as the central technical interface among customers, field sales and applications teams, design, test, product, systems, software, and marketing organizations.
- Translate customer use cases, system constraints, and emerging navigation requirements into actionable recommendations for new products, platforms, reference solutions, and development tools.
- Lead complex technical discussions, customer demonstrations, proof-of-concept activities, and design reviews, including escalation of key risks and performance gaps to appropriate stakeholders.
- Provide technical training and mentoring to field applications engineers, sales-channel partners, customers, and less-experienced engineers.
- Contribute to customer-facing knowledge systems, technical forums, application articles, and other scalable support resources.
- Participate in customer calls and visits. Travel is expected to be approximately 15% of the time.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- Typically 5 or more years of relevant experience in product applications, systems engineering, inertial sensing, navigation, robotics, aerospace, autonomous systems, semiconductor products, or a related field.
- Strong electronic component and system background, including development, applications support, or product engineering for semiconductor devices, electronic modules, or embedded systems.
- Hands-on experience evaluating and troubleshooting real-world hardware and electronics using oscilloscopes, power supplies, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.
- Strong understanding of inertial sensors, including gyroscopes, accelerometers, IMUs, sensor error sources, calibration, and system-level performance tradeoffs.
- Experience using MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or comparable technical computing and software-development environments for data analysis, modeling, simulation, test automation, or embedded implementation.
- Strong personal initiative and demonstrated ability to define, investigate, and solve difficult technical problems with limited direction.
- Ability to lead technical discussions across customers and cross-functional engineering teams and communicate complex concepts clearly in written and spoken English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with inertial navigation systems, attitude and heading reference systems, dead reckoning, or Positioning, Navigation, and Timing applications.
- Experience implementing, analyzing, or troubleshooting state-estimation and attitude-determination algorithms, particularly Kalman filters, Extended Kalman Filters, Unscented Kalman Filters, or related Bayesian estimation techniques.
- Experience with GNSS/INS fusion, including loosely coupled and tightly coupled architectures and multi-GNSS measurement models.
- Direct experience with GNSS receivers, antennas, signal quality, receiver firmware, and hardware integration.
- Familiarity with advanced GNSS techniques such as carrier-phase processing, integer ambiguity resolution, Precise Point Positioning, and Real-Time Kinematic positioning.
- Understanding of GNSS corrections and augmentation, including ephemeris and clock inputs, ionospheric modeling, and RTCM-based data exchange.
- Experience with timing and synchronization interfaces such as Pulse Per Second and Precision Time Protocol.
- Experience integrating sensors and navigation algorithms into robotics, UAVs, autonomous vehicles, gimbal systems, industrial equipment, or other motion-control platforms.
- Knowledge of modern controls, signal processing, coordinate frames, navigation mechanization, covariance analysis, digital filtering, and sensor error modeling.
- Experience developing, testing, documenting, or deploying robust production-quality embedded or C++ software for sensor fusion or navigation systems.
- Experience converting application requirements into customer-ready demonstrations, reference architectures, technical documentation, and product-roadmap input.
Staff-Level Leadership Expectations
- Provide technical leadership across ambiguous, multidisciplinary customer and product challenges where inertial-sensor behavior, navigation algorithms, embedded software, hardware integration, and end-application constraints interact.
- Influence product and platform direction through structured analysis of customer requirements, competitive approaches, system architectures, and performance gaps.
- Establish repeatable methods, tools, and best practices that scale customer support and improve the effectiveness of the broader applications organization.
- Mentor engineers and raise the team's capability in inertial sensing, navigation, state estimation, GNSS integration, and system-level troubleshooting.
