Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is the fast-moving, award-winning technology engine that powers Scotiabank’s Corporate, Investment Banking, and Capital Markets businesses.
The Role
GBME - Risk Technology is searching for a Programmer Analyst to develop, enhance, test, and support Counterparty Credit Risk applications and modernization initiatives.
The successful candidate will combine strong programming and analytical skills with an interest in capital markets and risk technology. You will work closely with developers, business analysts, quality assurance teams, project managers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable, scalable, and maintainable technology solutions that create value for our business partners and customers.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INITIAL PROJECT:
Modernization project: Migrate legacy database components and market risk processing to a modern, automated pipeline that supports faster, safer, and more frequent application upgrades.
KEY SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR PROJECT:
- 1-3 years of experience in software development, application support, systems analysis, or a related technology role; relevant co-op or internship experience will be considered.
- Hands-on knowledge of programming, SQL, data processing, testing, and troubleshooting;
- Exposure to capital markets. Any experience with risk management is an asset.
As part of the role, you’ll
- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain application components supporting Counterparty Credit Risk and related risk technology processes
- Translate business and functional requirements into technical designs, program logic, data mappings, and maintainable code.
- Develop and optimise database queries, data-processing routines, interfaces, scripts, and batch workflows.
- Analyse existing applications, data flows, and system behaviours to identify defects, dependencies, performance issues, and improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with business analysts, developers, architects, quality assurance teams, and infrastructure partners throughout solution design and delivery.
- Create and execute unit and component tests; support system, integration, regression, and user acceptance testing.
- Investigate defects and production issues using logs, data analysis, code review, and root-cause analysis; implement sustainable fixes.
- Participate in code reviews, release activities, deployment validation, technical documentation, and operational handover.
- Apply Agile delivery practices, secure coding standards, source-control processes, and Software Development Life Cycle controls
Minimum Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience as a Programmer Analyst, Software Developer, Application Developer, Systems Analyst, or in a related role; relevant co-op or internship experience will be considered
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field
- Working knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python, Java, C#, or a comparable object-oriented or scripting language
- Practical knowledge of SQL, relational databases, data structures, file processing, and application integration concepts
- Familiarity with Unix/Linux, shell scripting, job scheduling, source control, debugging tools, and automated deployment practices
- Understanding of software design, coding, unit testing, defect management, and production support within an Agile SDLC
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, organisational, and communication skills
- Ability to learn complex systems quickly, work independently and collaboratively, and communicate effectively with technical and business stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting banking applications, risk systems, data pipelines, batch processing, or reporting platforms is an asset.
- Experience with Python, Java, SQL, Oracle, Unix/Linux, Git, JIRA, and Confluence is an asset.
- Exposure to cloud platforms, APIs, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, application monitoring, or legacy-system modernisation is an asset.
