CHIEF OF PSYCHIATRY & MEDICAL DIRECTOR, MENTAL HEALTH & ADDICTIONS PROGRAM
Department and Program Overview
HRH has an exceptional opportunity for a forward-thinking psychiatrist to serve as Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Mental Health and Addictions Program . This leadership role offers the opportunity to guide a collegial department of more than 30 psychiatrists within a community academic hospital and advance a comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Program (the “Program”) that delivers inpatient, outpatient, urgent, emergency, and addictions services through an interdisciplinary model of care.
Located in a state-of-the-art facility, the Program includes 58 adult inpatient beds, six child and adolescent inpatient beds, and a dedicated Emergency Psychiatry Unit. Outpatient services support adults, children, and adolescents through addictions, early intervention, urgent care, and general psychiatry programs. Recent enhancements include the transition of adult outpatient services to a stepped-care model and a fully interdisciplinary child and adolescent outpatient program supported by registered nurses, social workers, and child and youth workers.
The Program continues to advance innovative models of care through initiatives such as a neurostimulation program featuring repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and an Acute Behavioural Unit developed in partnership with Geriatrics. Ongoing service redesign efforts are focused on urgent care, the psychosis care continuum, and transitional-age programming.
Position Summary
As Chief of the Department of Psychiatry , you will oversee the professional practice and quality of care delivered by more than 30 psychiatrists while supporting program development, service innovation, and continuous quality improvement in alignment with HRH's mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities.
As Medical Director of the Mental Health and Addictions Program , you will provide strategic and operational leadership for Program services. In partnership with the Program Director, you will support the development, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing enhancement of services to meet the evolving needs of patients, families, and the community.
The successful candidate will be a collaborative physician leader committed to clinical excellence, patient-centered care, education, and innovation. Working closely with physician, administrative, and interdisciplinary leaders, you will contribute to the advancement of both the Department and Program, including the continued development of academic and clinical initiatives through participation in organizational, departmental, and medical leadership activities. Participation in the HRH Physician Leadership and Engagement Program is required.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
The successful candidate will be an accomplished psychiatrist and respected physician leader with a demonstrated record of clinical excellence, leadership, and collaboration. Candidates must hold a certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent qualification) and be a member of, or eligible for membership with, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The ideal candidate will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrate a commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, accountability, and patient-centered care.
Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of post-certification clinical experience in Psychiatry and demonstrated leadership experience within HRH or a comparable complex healthcare environment. Experience advancing strategic priorities, leading quality improvement initiatives, supporting physician engagement, managing change, and driving program development is essential.
As a member of TAHSN, HRH supports medical education at all levels. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to academic and educational activities, including the teaching, supervision, mentorship, and professional development of medical learners and colleagues. Applicants must hold, or be eligible for, a faculty appointment in an appropriate clinical department at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and will be expected to support the continued advancement of both academic and clinical programs within the Department and the Program.
