About Jane Doe Inc.

Jane Doe Inc. (JDI) is the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, a statewide social justice coalition working to create a safer, healthier, and freer Massachusetts beyond abuse. With our 67 member programs, other state and territorial sexual and domestic violence coalitions, and key local and national partners, we address the root causes of violence and promote justice, safety, and healing for survivors.

Our work includes public policy and systems advocacy, prevention and movement building, messaging and communications, membership services, training, and education. Our member programs provide advocacy and support to tens of thousands of survivors each year, and we are guided by the voices of survivors.

About the Role

JDI seeks a Development Manager to support the expansion and sustainability of our work. This is a new, full-time role on a small team of nine, reporting to the Deputy Director, who holds the vision for development at JDI. Our Executive Director is enthusiastic about fundraising as part of the coalition's mission, and we need a partner to carry the day-to-day.

This role is both outward-facing and operational. You will tend to the details that make fundraising work (the donor database, stewardship, follow-ups, emails) and help run our events. You will also be a warm face for JDI in the community, able to give the JDI pitch, make smaller asks such as in-kind donations and sponsorships, and follow up with committed sponsors. You will support and take part in major gift and strategy work, but you are not expected to close major gifts or lead strategy.

About 70-75% of JDI's budget comes from public funding, so growing and diversifying private support is a major goal. Our private revenue includes member dues, grants, our annual appeal, and our signature spring event, Spring Into Action. Our individual donor base is small (about 500 people) with a small but generous group of major donors, and we are working with a consultant on a major giving pipeline.

This role is a fit for someone who is both introverted and extroverted: comfortable in the back-end details one day and in a room full of new people the next. There is room to grow into development writing and, over time, a more senior role.

What You'll Do

Development Operations

- Work with the Deputy Director and Executive Director to set and carry out JDI's annual fundraising plan and calendar: the annual appeal, small events, our signature spring event, corporate sponsorships, and direct solicitations of donors and prospects.
- Support the Deputy Director in diversifying our funding base and cultivating new support.
- Keep fundraising information current in Little Green Light, our donor CRM.
- Maintain email distribution lists in Constant Contact for donor communications.
- Help create print and digital materials for fundraising (newsletters, the annual appeal, event outreach, solicitation and pledge cards) with JDI staff and communications consultants, including working with vendors to keep deadlines and budgets.
- Work with the Deputy Director and Finance team on gift receiving, processing, and acknowledgment.
- Research prospects and help prioritize potential donors for engagement.

Event Coordination

- Partner with the Deputy Director, Executive Director, the Board's development committee, and JDI staff.
- Support Spring Into Action, our signature event: event logistics, staffing the host committee, tracking sponsor outreach and stewardship, soliciting and stewarding in-kind auction donors, acknowledgments, and follow-up.

Membership Support

- Support membership capacity building in fundraising, communications, event management, and external relations by joining or co-facilitating the bimonthly Hot Topics convening.

Communications and External Relations

- Be a warm, welcoming ambassador for JDI at our events, third-party fundraising events, and other community events, to expand our visibility and build new relationships.
- Work with JDI's communications and program teams on clear, consistent messaging and partnerships that fit our strategic priorities.
- Describe JDI's goals and plans thoughtfully, and help elevate JDI as a thought leader in the field with the public and private sectors, individuals, and the business community.
- Other fundraising and external relations responsibilities as assigned.

What Success Looks Like

By 90 Days

- You have met the team, members of the coalition, and JDI's current donors and sponsors, and you understand how development works at JDI.
- The donor database in Little Green Light is current, and gifts, acknowledgments, and follow-ups are going out on time.
- You have taken over the day-to-day work that is hardest for the team to hold right now: stewardship, follow-ups, and email.
- You are working in a steady rhythm with the Deputy Director.

By Six Months

- You own a clear piece of the annual appeal and Spring Into Action planning, and the team can count on you to keep the details moving.
- Sponsors and in-kind donors are getting timely follow-up and thank-yous, and you have made first asks for smaller in-kind gifts or sponsorships.
- You are a familiar, welcoming face for JDI at events in Greater Boston.
- You and the Deputy Director have a shared view of where you want to grow, whether into development writing or more strategy work.

What We're Looking For: Who You Are

We recognize strong candidates may not meet every qualification. If you are excited about this role and believe your experience could contribute to our mission, we encourage you to apply. Transferable skills from events, membership organizations, advocacy, or campaigns are welcome.

About You (Requirements):

- You have a deep commitment to JDI's mission and values, including an anti-oppression framework for ending gender-based violence.
- You are detail oriented, you manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting, and you work well both on a team and independently.
- You take a community-centered, non-tokenizing approach to fundraising and understand movement and coalition-based work.
- You know fundraising principles and best practices, and you have experience in nonprofit fundraising, formal or informal.
- You are an active, bold, creative networker who can start, strengthen, and sustain relationships with donors, corporations, and community partners.
- You communicate well, verbally and in writing, and you can give a clear pitch for an organization you believe in.
- You use good judgment and understand boundaries and confidentiality.
- You are comfortable with Microsoft Office and online design platforms such as Canva.
- You can commute to Boston for in-person meetings and travel to community events in the Greater Boston area regularly. Travel statewide on occasion. There will be some evening and weekend work.
- You can work independently and remotely.
- You have grace under pressure, you welcome diverse perspectives, and you have a sense of humor.

These experiences would add to your profile:

- Experience with Little Green Light or another donor CRM.
- Experience with online giving platforms, auction software, Constant Contact, and other fundraising or communications tools.
- Experience creating events and fundraising materials.
- Experience with advocacy or movement organizations.
- Grant prospecting or development writing experience.
- A bachelor's degree in a related field. Relevant life and work experience may substitute for a degree.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role based in Boston, MA, with roughly 5-8 in-person days per month . JDI's team is mostly virtual, and staff meetings are held in person a couple of times a month. You will also be out in the community at events, usually in Greater Boston, and you may be in the office more often than other staff for tasks like printing and mailings . You must be able to commute to Boston as needed and work independently and remotely the rest of the time.

This is a small team of ten. You will work most closely with the Deputy Director and Executive Director, and you will meet the full team for a final conversation. Occasional evening and weekend work is expected around events and the giving season.

What We Offer

- Salary: $83,000-$87,000 annually.
- Health: JDI-subsidized group health and dental insurance.

- A new role with room to grow into development writing and a more senior position.
- The chance to build private support for a coalition that makes a real difference for survivors across Massachusetts.
