Position Title: Pump Service Technician - Field Service Level 1

Reports To: Manager, Shop Operations

Location: Onsite , Comstock Park. Michigan

Position Summary:

The Pump Service Technician – Field Service Level 1 is an experienced, senior-level technician who independently leads field service work at customer facilities and is responsible for the inspection, disassembly, repair, assembly, testing, and documentation of pumps and rotating equipment within the Grand Rapids Service Center. This position supports a wide range of pump technologies serving industrial, municipal, power, and process customers. The technician leads field service jobs from arrival through completion, including installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and on-site repair, and serves as the primary KSB point of contact for customers on site. Regional travel, overtime, and emergency response may be required based on business and customer needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Shop Service

- Pump and rotating equipment repair, inspection, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals, engineering drawings, specifications, and work orders.
- Perform detailed incoming inspections and dimensional verification of pumps and rotating equipment.
- Document repair findings and recommend corrective actions using service reports and inspection documentation.
- Perform teardowns, inspections, voltage conversions, impeller trims/change-outs, and repairs.
- Perform balancing, assembly verification, hydrostatic testing, and performance testing when required.
- Work with service engineers to develop repair plans and identify replacement parts.
- Verify tolerances, fits, clearances, and measurements using precision measuring instruments.
- Produce accurate, fully dimensioned hand sketches of pump components for reverse engineering, replacement part manufacturing, and repair documentation.
- Identify component materials and failure modes such as wear, corrosion, erosion, cavitation, and fatigue, and recommend repairs or material upgrades suited to the application.
- Maintain accurate material, parts, and labor records.
- Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, and rigging equipment safely.

Field Service

- Independently lead field service jobs at customer sites, including installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of pumps and rotating equipment.
- Perform on-site removal, reinstallation, and field repair of pumps, mechanical seals, bearings, couplings, and related components.
- Perform shaft alignment (laser and dial indicator), vibration data collection and analysis, and equipment condition assessments.
- Diagnose equipment failures on site, determine root cause, and make sound repair decisions without direct supervision, escalating to service engineering when appropriate.
- Serve as the primary KSB point of contact on site, communicating job status, findings, and recommendations directly to customer personnel.
- Identify additional repair and service opportunities in the field and communicate them to the service sales and engineering teams.
- Complete field service reports, timesheets, and job documentation accurately and on time.
- Mentor and provide technical direction to Level 2 and Level 3 technicians on shop and field assignments.
- Follow all customer site safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and permit-to-work procedures, and complete required site safety orientations.
- Maintain assigned tools, test equipment, and service vehicle in safe, clean, and working conditions.
- Represent KSB professionally and support positive, long-term customer relationships.

General

- Maintain a safe and clean work environment and follow all KSB and OSHA safety requirements.

- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in pump repair, rotating equipment repair, millwright work, or related mechanical trades, including demonstrated experience performing field service independently at customer sites.
- Experience with centrifugal pumps, vertical pumps, multistage pumps, or similar rotating equipment required.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, repair specifications, and inspection reports.
- Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and laser alignment equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of shaft alignment, balancing, bearings, mechanical seals, pump hydraulics, and electric motors.
- Working knowledge of metallurgy as it applies to pumps and rotating equipment, including common materials (cast iron, carbon and stainless steels, duplex, bronze, and hard-facing alloys), material compatibility with process fluids, and the basics of hardness and heat treatment.
- Ability to create clear, accurate, dimensioned hand sketches of parts from field or shop measurements.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic service documentation systems.
- Welding and machining experience is a plus.
- Valid driver license with a driving record that meets company insurance requirements.
- Willingness to travel regionally to customer sites, including overnight stays as required.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and emergency call-outs.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred, or ability to obtain; ability to complete customer site safety training and background or drug screening requirements as needed.
- Strong communication and customer service skills, with proven ability to manage jobs independently, make sound decisions in the field, and represent KSB with customers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical work for extended periods. Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with approved lifting equipment. Ability to work around large rotating equipment, cranes, machine tools, and industrial repair environments while adhering to all safety requirements. Field service work may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, elevated work areas, and confined spaces, and requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by KSB and customer sites.
