The Opportunity:
The Senior Director, European Market Access Operations acts as a strategic and operational partner to the Vice President, Value, Market Access and Pricing, Europe. The role provides leadership across the execution and delivery of key Market Access and launch-readiness priorities throughout the region.
As the central integrator for European Market Access, the role ensures that strategic priorities are translated into coordinated execution across functions, assets and markets. The Senior Director drives cross-functional alignment, execution discipline and organizational effectiveness, ensuring that material risks and dependencies are addressed early and that leadership attention remains focused on the highest-value opportunities and decisions.
The role is accountable for establishing the governance, integrated planning, performance insights and ways of working required to execute the European Market Access strategy effectively.
Key responsibilities:
European Market Access Strategic Leadership
- Partner with the Vice President, Value, Market Access and Pricing, Europe to develop, shape and advance the European Market Access strategic agenda and priority leadership topics.
- Shape portfolio strategy development by translating relevant business insights, emerging risks and opportunities into clear recommendations.
- Translate strategic direction into clear regional priorities, execution requirements and decision points.
- Provide insights and recommendations that strengthen leadership decision-making, prioritization and resource allocation.
- Synthesize complex business, portfolio and execution information into decision-ready recommendations for executive and governance forums, clearly articulating implications, options, risks and required actions.
Market Access Operational Leadership
- Own the integrated view of European Market Access priorities across access strategy, pricing, JCA and HTA, evidence generation, launch readiness and country readiness, ensuring alignment, visibility of dependencies and consistent execution.
- Lead strategic Market Access initiatives spanning assets and therapy areas, ensuring clear accountability, timely decision-making and resolution of material risks and dependencies.
- Identify cross-asset synergies, organizational capability needs and competing priorities requiring leadership attention.
- Establish standards for integrated planning, governance, risk management and executive reporting across European Market Access.
- Lead functional annual business planning and budgeting processes, ensuring that resources and investments are aligned with strategic priorities.
- Monitor delivery against European Market Access priorities, annual goals, KPIs and critical milestones, identifying areas requiring intervention or reprioritization.
- Challenge workstream plans and recommend changes to priorities, resources or sequencing where delivery or strategic outcomes are at risk.
Cross-Functional and Organizational Integration
- Act as the central integrator across Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, HEOR, Commercial, Government Affairs, Legal, Compliance, and global and country Market Access teams.
- Drive alignment and coordinated execution across critical European Market Access priorities, including launch-readiness and access-related activities.
- Ensure that cross-functional execution remains aligned with the overarching access strategy and organizational priorities.
- Identify and resolve material cross-functional dependencies within the role’s remit, escalating matters requiring executive intervention.
- Influence senior regional, global and country stakeholders without direct authority, creating clarity around priorities, responsibilities, dependencies and required decisions.
- Ensure that leadership decisions are translated into clear actions, accountable owners and measurable follow-through.
Governance and Communication Leadership
- Design and lead the governance model and operating rhythm for the European Market Access Leadership Team.
- Design and facilitate leadership meetings, governance forums, offsites and strategic workshops focused on decisions, outcomes and organizational effectiveness.
- Establish clear decision pathways, escalation mechanisms and expectations for accountability across European Market Access.
- Provide concise, decision-ready executive briefings that clearly articulate implications, recommendations, options and required actions.
- Maintain visibility of key decisions and ensure that agreed actions are implemented across relevant teams and workstreams.
- Reinforce agreed leadership behaviours, team norms and collective accountability.
External Partner Leadership
- Provide strategic oversight of vendors and consultancies supporting European Market Access.
- Ensure that external partner scopes, deliverables, timelines and investments remain aligned with strategic business priorities.
- Establish clear performance expectations and governance mechanisms for critical external engagements.
- Hold external partners accountable for agreed quality, milestones, deliverables and outcomes.
- Identify duplication, gaps and dependencies across external partner workstreams and internal teams.
- Assess whether external resources are delivering the expected quality, value and organizational benefit, recommending corrective action or reprioritization where required.
Team and Organizational Effectiveness Leadership
- Lead the continued evolution of the European Market Access operating model, organizational design and ways of working.
- Develop scalable processes, tools and standards that strengthen execution, transparency and consistency across workstreams and markets.
- Partner with Global Market Access on capability-building and Market Access excellence initiatives aligned with strategic needs and identified capability gaps.
- Strengthen team integration, collaboration and knowledge sharing across regional, global and country Market Access teams.
- Partner with Human Resources on selected talent, organizational and culture priorities.
- Promote continuous improvement by incorporating lessons from portfolio planning, launch readiness and execution into future ways of working.
Key Decision Responsibilities
- Determine the structures, governance processes and operating rhythms required to support effective European Market Access execution.
- Establish standards for integrated planning, risk management, performance monitoring and executive reporting.
- Challenge workstream owners and external partners where plans, resources or delivery are not aligned with agreed priorities.
- Recommend reprioritization, resource changes or escalation where strategic outcomes or critical timelines are at risk.
- Shape leadership discussions by presenting clear options, associated implications and required decisions.
- Resolve cross-functional issues within the scope of the role and escalate matters requiring executive or functional decision-making.
- Ensure that leadership decisions are translated into accountable execution across relevant teams and workstreams.
Required Skills, Experience and Education:
- 12+ years of relevant experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, including substantial experience leading European Market Access strategy, launch planning, portfolio operations or complex cross-functional programs.
- Demonstrated ability to operate as a strategic partner to senior leaders, synthesize complex business issues, shape recommendations and influence decisions across regional, global and country organizations.
- Proven experience leading integrated planning, governance, risk management, business planning and organizational effectiveness across multiple workstreams, assets or markets.
- Strong understanding of European pricing, reimbursement, HTA and launch-readiness requirements.
- Demonstrated experience leading or integrating European HTA/JCA activities and pre-launch Market Access planning.
- Proven ability to influence senior cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority, resolve complex dependencies and maintain accountability across teams.
- Experience overseeing external partners, significant work programs and associated budgets or investments.
- Strong strategic judgment, executive communication and organizational problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and evolving environment, providing structure, clarity and momentum in situations of ambiguity.
- Experience working within European pharmaceutical markets is required.
Preferred Skills:
- Oncology experience is strongly preferred.
