Pay Range:
$38.20 - $57.30
Candidate should have leadership experience and ability to maintain proper staffing of Medical Interpreters as well as experience in a medical environment performing medical verbal and written interpretation.
Experience Required:
Typically requires 5 years of experience in a medical environment performing medical verbal and written interpretation and translation, leading and prioritizing staff work, and acting as a resource to staff on complex cases.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Possesses professional command of bilingual medical terminology, including anatomy and physiology, diagnostic process, treatment, prevention and health education models.
- Possesses knowledge concerning the ethics of medical interpreting as outlined by the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC).
- Ability to work in challenging situations to oversee the work of interpreters involved in issues of delivering difficult messages including death and dying.
- Excellent human relations and communication skills necessary.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to utilize video interpreting techniques.
Major Responsibilities:
- Maintains proper staffing of Medical Interpreter caregivers, including the development and maintenance of productivity, quality and patient experience standards.
- Monitors utilization of interpreter services and provides work direction to staff and agency interpreters as necessary.
- Provides expertise in complex cases involving end of life issues, difficult family situations, domestic violence, and problem-solving difficult cases. Serves as a resource for interpretation, education and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Maintains a direct line of communication with the medical interpreter leadership and staff, dispatchers and other hospital/clinic departments to assure the optimum in patient flow and patient care.
- Identifies and participates in the resolution of interdepartmental problems and recommends changes as defined by observed trends. Investigates patient, family, physician, nursing, and/or hospital staff complaints and responds to suggestions in a timely manner.
- Establishes and maintains in-service programs for medical interpreters as well as clinical staff working with medical interpreters.
- Provides medical interpreting services for patients as needed.
- Adheres to all federal, state and local laws and regulations governing the practice of medical interpreting in healthcare.
- Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
- Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
Medical Interpreter (CMI) certification issued by The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters needs to be obtained within 1 year.
Education Required:
Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program in.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must wear protective clothing (i.e., lead aprons, isolation gowns, protective eyewear) when necessary.
- Position requires travel. May be exposed to road and weather hazards.
- Exposed to a normal office environment.
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
