## Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor this position will be responsible for:
- Providing legal services to the Corporation in all areas of the law as necessary, with an emphasis on insurance and risk;
- Administering the Corporation’s insurance portfolio and ensuring that the Corporation is adequately insured and/or protected;
- Carrying out operational aspects of the Corporation’s risk management function to reduce, control, transfer and finance risk; 
- Consulting and negotiating with adjusters, brokers, insurers and internal and external lawyers on insurance and risk matters;
- Drafting reports to CAO and Council and attending Council, board or committee meetings, as required;
- Preparing legal opinions for the guidance of City Council and Administration;
- Negotiating and drafting corporate/commercial agreements; 
- Providing additional legal services to the Corporation as may be required, which may include representation before the courts, administrative boards and tribunals;
- Performing Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporate Health and Safety Program; and
- Performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

- Must have a JD, LLB or equivalent and a minimum of six (6) years of broad legal experience after being called to the Bar, with emphasis on: a) personal injury and insurance law; and/or b) corporate and commercial law;
- Must be in and maintain good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
- Must have basic knowledge of contract law and insurance law;
- A risk management or insurance designation would be an asset;
- A basic knowledge of municipal law and the Municipal Act, 2001 would be an asset;
- Must have the ability to travel to off site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required.  If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful driver’s license is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment;
- Must be fully computer literate and well versed in the MS Office suite, particularly Outlook and Word (Excel and Access skills will be considered assets);
- Must be able to effectively use Westlaw@Carswell and Internet resources for legal research;
- Must have strong interpersonal, negotiation, and verbal and written communication skills;
- Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work.
