The Advanced Metering Grid Operations Engineer will provide functional oversight, hands-on application processing, and technical leadership for ENMAX's Distributed Energy Resource (DER) programs, ensuring regulatory compliance and operational excellence across all micro-generation and distributed generation activities. This role processes DER applications, manages key stakeholder and customer relationships, leads and mentors technical teams, and serves as a subject matter expert for DER policy, interconnection requirements, and grid operations standards. They will also provide cross-functional support across metering operations to ensure continuity of service and alignment with evolving grid technologies and regulatory requirements.
Major Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight and execution of the DER application intake process, ensuring all Micro-Generation and Distributed Generation applications are managed in compliance with requirements set by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), AESO, ENMAX Corporation, Alberta Electrical Utility Code, Canadian Electrical Code, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Provide technical leadership, coaching, and mentorship to DER team members, ensuring all technical deliverables are carried out in accordance with ENMAX's Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP).
- Manage and maintain strategic relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including major DER customers, consultants, third-party developers, Control Centre, Customer Communications, Network Operations, and Regulatory teams, serving as the primary escalation point for complex technical, operational, customer, contractual, and regulatory matters.
- Oversee the review and continual improvement of DER policies, procedures, connection guides, and standards to ensure alignment with regulatory developments, market changes, and new DER technologies (including storage, EV charging, and advanced inverter systems).
- Oversee meter exchanges, commissioning of customer accounts ready for micro-generation, and coordinate with Regulated Market Services to ensure proper customer bill handling and accurate meter data management.
- Provide technical and regulatory guidance to contractors and customers for DER applications.
- Lead and direct interconnection and hosting capacity studies, review interconnection agreements for technical accuracy, and coordinate and witness field commissioning tests to verify compliance with ENMAX Standards.
- Interface and build relationships with regulatory bodies (AUC, AESO, Measurement Canada) and internal Regulatory, Network Operations, Control Centre, and Customer Communications stakeholders to represent ENMAX's position in DER-related regulatory proceedings, operational planning discussions, working groups, and industry stakeholder forums.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of work performed by MSR, Meter Technicians, and TRAC teams, and provide reporting as evidence of compliance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
- Provide cross-functional support across metering operations, including Meter Lab activities, to ensure service continuity, technical expertise sharing, and operational resilience across the Metering Services group.
- Develop business cases, strategic recommendations, and technical input on emerging DER technology requirements, supporting the growth and evolution of ENMAX's grid modernization strategy.
Education Required:
- Degree in Electrical engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and
Qualifications:
- Minimum 4 years as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA, with a focus on power systems.
- Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience with a wires owner (distribution utility) in DER-related activities.
- Valid Province of Alberta driver's licence, upgrade as required.
- Deep understanding of the ENMAX stakeholder ecosystem, including Protection & Controls, TRAC, Regulated Market Services, Revenue Metering, and grid operations.
- Demonstrated experience in key account management, customer relationship management, or strategic stakeholder engagement within a regulated utility or energy sector environment.
- Experience with AUC regulations and requirements applicable to DERs, including Rule 024, the Electric Utilities Act, and the Microgeneration and Small Scale Generation Regulations.
- Knowledge of IEEE 1547, UL 1741, CSA 107.1, and applicable IEEE communications standards for DER systems.
- Familiarity with Part 1 of the Canadian Electrical Code as it relates to DER installations.
- Familiarity with the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act, Regulations and Specifications, Measurement Canada Standards, AUC and AESO requirements, and ENMAX Revenue Metering Standards.
- Proficiency in single-phase and three-phase power calculations and power systems modelling, including load flow, interconnection, and hosting capacity studies.
- Ability to review and verify single-line diagrams, interconnection agreements, technical specifications, and meter program settings.
- Demonstrated experience leading or overseeing technical teams and managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
- Experience with the design and operation of small micro-generation and distributed generation systems, including solar PV, energy storage, and advanced inverter technologies.

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB) . You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
