Exciting Opportunity at MSK: Infection Control Technician
At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), our mission is to end cancer for life through exceptional patient care, innovative research, and education. The Infection Control Technician plays an important role in supporting Infection Prevention surveillance and laboratory activities, helping ensure accurate, timely data that informs patient safety, infection prevention, and healthcare epidemiology initiatives.
Role Overview
- Support Infection Prevention epidemiologic surveillance, research, and laboratory-based testing activities.
- Coordinate C. difficile strain-typing workflows, including specimen receipt, tracking, preparation, plating, and shipment coordination.
- Assist with quarterly Legionella surveillance activities, including sample collection, labeling, documentation, and testing support.
- Perform molecular testing procedures, including specimen preparation, DNA extraction, PCR, and thermocycler operation.
- Maintain organism inventories, laboratory databases, and testing records to ensure accurate and organized documentation.
- Prepare routine surveillance and laboratory reports for Infection Prevention review and analysis.
- Perform quality-control activities and support compliance with laboratory, biosafety, and institutional requirements.
- Monitor laboratory equipment, maintain equipment records, and assist with inventory and supply management.
- Collaborate with infection preventionists and other hospital departments while appropriately communicating and escalating unexpected findings.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, Public Health, or a related scientific discipline.
- Hands-on laboratory experience gained through academic research, internships, clinical laboratories, or professional roles.
- Experience performing PCR, DNA extraction, pipetting, and other molecular biology techniques.
- Knowledge of microbiology laboratory practices, aseptic technique, and biosafety procedures.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records, documentation, and data.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and communicate findings clearly.
Core Skills
- Molecular testing and specimen processing using PCR and DNA extraction methodologies.
- Laboratory documentation, data entry, database management, and reporting accuracy.
- Quality-control practices, biosafety compliance, and adherence to established laboratory procedures.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize daily testing and laboratory activities independently.
- Dependability, attention to detail, and effective communication when addressing testing results, workflow issues, or unexpected findings.

Pay Range: $24.05 - $36.21
