Video Content Strategist

Job Description

This position is responsible for the development, design and implementation of video content strategy and related digital communications to support campus-wide initiatives at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Working closely with key members within University Relations, the Video Content Strategist plans, coordinates and implements a wide variety of video and digital media projects involving social media, advertising, web and other digital channels, to promote UBC’s Okanagan campus.

Organizational Status

This position reports directly to the Digital Marketing Manager. The Video Content Strategist works as part of the University Relations team and interacts with students, staff and faculty across the university.

Work Performed

Video Content strategy, planning, and execution

- Leads the implementation and execution of video content initiatives and projects, recommending new approaches to engage audiences, optimize content and improve efficiency, reducing production timelines.
- Advises on video storytelling approaches and best practice standards for UBC Okanagan content including faculties and administrative units.
- Proactively develops relationships across the UBC Okanagan community and conducts research and interviews to identify and develop compelling story opportunities.
- Plans, develops and produces video and related digital assets for social media and various communications and marketing channels within tight timelines.
- Investigates, develops and pitches original story ideas and develops approved stories into audience-centered video content that supports UBC Okanagan communications and marketing goals.
- Develops video concepts, story outlines, scripts, interview questions, shot lists, storyboards and other pre-production materials as required.
- Stays current with latest trends and best practices in social, video and digital content and recommends new approaches and opportunities.
- Coordinates video content with campus-wide communications, ensuring integration across social media, advertising campaigns, websites, media outreach and other channels.
- Maintains UBC Okanagan style guides, standards and templates in compliance with UBC standards and best practices.

Communications and Content Strategy

- Leads video content development in support of campus-wide communications and marketing priorities.
- In consultation with key partners, leads consultations, brainstorming, and discovery work and develops creative video approaches that reflect UBC Okanagan’s communications and marketing goals.
- Develops communications and video project plans, working with partners to clarify goals, target audiences, creative criteria, project timelines and production requirements.
- Manages projects and coordinates workflow of content providers, participants, designers, and external service providers to deliver projects on time and within available resources.
- Supports the promotion of campus-wide projects, events and initiatives for students, faculty, staff and the public.
- Optimizes video content for audience experience, accessibility and channel requirements, delivering content to the right audience at the right time.
- Develops and manages video content creation processes, including pre-production, production and post-production.

Video Production, Evaluation and Reporting

- Plans, films, edits and produces digital video content, coordinating schedules, locations, participants, equipment and other production requirements, often within tight timelines.
- Operates video cameras and related production equipment and applies appropriate approaches to composition, lighting, sound recording and microphone deployment.
- Directs and supports participants during filming to capture natural, engaging and effective interviews and visual content.
- Edits video and audio and incorporates graphics, titles, captions, music, photography, animation and other visual elements as appropriate.
- Creates edits, cutdowns and adaptations and optimizes video for different digital platforms, formats, audiences and campaigns.
- Conducts quality control to ensure completed video assets meet project requirements, accessibility standards, UBC brand standards and channel specifications.
- Maintains and monitors current video and digital content practices and recommends related enhancements and experiments with new digital tools.
- Works with the content team to review available content performance and audience insights and apply findings to ongoing improvement.
- Prepares presentations, reports, and other deliverables as needed.

Communication Services

- Manages marketing and communications projects.
- Coordinates, maintains and develops video and digital communications materials.
- Edits for style, substance, and organization; reorganizes content to create consistency in grammar, format, message, and voice, recommending substantive editorial changes as needed.
- Coordinates with other content team members to identify opportunities to extend stories across owned, earned and paid channels.
- Maintains familiarity with major communications trends, issues, and technologies.
- Functions as a communications resource and provides advice and consultation on video storytelling and production approaches.
- Participates on university committees, as appropriate.
- Works with other staff in University Relations to meet campus-wide needs.

Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position must exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with staff and faculty. They must make decisions on how best to manage projects given short timeframes, relative strategic importance of projects, ease of substituting one project for another given staffing available, and the impact of failing to meet deadlines. The consequence of error in this area could be very serious for the university as it concerns the public image and profile of the UBC Okanagan campus on a provincial, national and international level. Providing accurate, consistent and high-quality video content supports clarity, reputation and effective use of university resources.

Minimum Qualifications

- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- Minimum of five years’ experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

- Relevant discipline for degree includes communications, journalism, film, media production, digital media or marketing.
- Related experience includes video content development, filming, editing, producing and digital storytelling.
- Advanced understanding of digital media and social media and demonstrated experience adapting video content for different platforms, audiences and formats.
- Advanced experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including video-editing software such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and related Adobe Creative Suite applications.
- Experience with Canva, Microsoft Office suite, and project management software an asset.
- Demonstrated experience shooting and editing video for digital communications and marketing channels.
- Demonstrated experience operating professional video cameras, audio equipment, microphones and lighting equipment.
- Experience in a post-secondary institution or similar environment an asset.
- A foundational understanding of visual design principles, knowledge of branding and working within a graphic identity system. Experience working with and providing feedback to designers. Basic graphic design skills are an asset.
- Experience using established and emerging social media channels for communication and audience engagement. Ability to use available social media and digital content insights to inform video development and optimization.
- Solid understanding of social media and digital video content best practices, accessibility and usability conventions.
- Ability to align creative strategies with institutional priorities and business goals
