Schedule & Compensation
- 40 hours guaranteed per week
- Average of 60+ hours per week , with some weeks reaching 70 hours
- Significant overtime available
- 24/7 on-call availability , including weekends and holidays
- Hours outside of Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM are paid at 1.5x overtime
- Per diem available
- Hotel pay for required travel
- Layover pay when applicable
Responsibilities
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment according to company policy and DOT regulations.
- Drive tractor-trailers to and from job sites and inspect loads and transported machinery.
- Verify transportation permits for overweight and oversize loads and equipment.
- Participate in daily work planning and safety briefings.
- Load, unload, move, and stage materials and equipment for rerailing, load adjustment/transfer, and track maintenance, repair, or new construction.
- Assist with the assembly, inspection, and operation of cranes and other equipment.
- Operate equipment according to standard procedures while following all safety rules and regulations.
- Assist with rigging and connecting chains, cables, and winches during derailment response.
- Operate equipment such as cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, rail-bound equipment, tractors, and skid-steer loaders when qualified.
- Perform work involving hydraulic tools, welding, cutting torches, electrical tools, and common hand tools.
- Assist with specialty lifting, rerailing, load transfer, track maintenance/repair, grading, and railroad construction activities.
- Continuously monitor equipment and vehicles to minimize downtime and maintain operational readiness.
- Perform and document minor equipment and vehicle service and repairs, including basic mechanical tasks such as oil changes.
- Report more complicated mechanical issues to the Shop Manager or Foreman.
- Assist with disassembly and loading of cranes and other equipment after job assignments.
- Restock vehicles and equipment with necessary parts, components, and supplies.
- Sort and properly dispose of scrap materials.
- Assist other departments or divisions as needed to meet operational needs.
- Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Requirements
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with a good driving record.
- Basic mechanical skills for minor equipment repairs, including oil changes.
- Experience in construction labor or a similar physically demanding role.
- Must be comfortable operating equipment and performing physical labor.
- Must be available 24/7 to respond to emergency service calls, including weekends and holidays.
- Must pass required qualification tests, training, and safety programs.
- Must be comfortable working in an emergency-response environment where quick and efficient work is required.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- 3+ years of experience operating heavy equipment , including:
Backhoe
- Bulldozer
- Excavator
- Front-end loader
- Grapple truck
- Rail-bound equipment
- Tractor
- Skid-steer loader
- Strong preference for CDL-A drivers with experience operating manual-transmission equipment .
- Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
