Position Summary :

The Healthy Living Educator will promote culturally centered health and wellness initiatives that uplift Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and community strengths. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering programming that promotes healthy eating, active living, and commercial tobacco prevention in Wabanaki communities.  This position will be centered around the Mi’kmaq, Presque Isle Community. They will work collaboratively with Tribal staff, Elders, youth, community organizations, and health professionals to ensure programming is respectful, community-driven, and aligned with cultural values. They are supervised by the Healthy Living Manager and work within a team of 4 other educators.

Position Details :

- This is a full-time benefits eligible position - working 40 hours a week.

- This will be a hybrid position - Applicants must be able to maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate occasional weekend and evening events.

- This starting hourly rate for this position is $24.58 an hour. Shift and experience may increase starting pay.

Duties and Responsibilities :

- Design and implement curriculum, community events, educational materials and programs that promote:

Traditional and contemporary healthy eating practices that support overall holistic health and family wellness.

- Increased opportunities for active living.

- Commercial tobacco prevention and cessation, while honoring traditional tobacco as a sacred medicine.

- Wabanaki worldview, teachings, and Wabanaki languages.

- Collect data and community feedback to measure program outcomes, using culturally appropriate evaluation methods.

- Build strong relationships with Tribal schools, youth programs, childcare centers, Elders, knowledge sharers, other community partner.

- Ability to implement Maine Nourish ME program deliverables in accordance with Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and University of New England (UNE requirements).

- Design and disseminate social media flyers and printed flyers that promote programming.

- Attend required trainings and meetings, both in person and online, in accordance with grant funding.

- Complete reporting and evaluation as related to deliverables

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required :

- Bachelor’s degree in public health or a related field (preferred) or high school diploma with 4 years of experience in a related field.

- Preferred Indigenous lived experience or experience working with indigenous communities.

- Experience with Microsoft Office - Excel, Outlook, Word and more.

Skills and Qualifications Required :

- A current driver's license, a good driving record and access to reliable transportation are required.

- Candidate must be willing to travel and maintain a flexible work schedule in order to support occasional weekend or evening events outside of scheduled work hours.

- The ability to work effectively as a team and independently.

- Excellent organizational and communication skills.

- A strong work ethic and enthusiasm.

- Must pass criminal background check.
